Migrate from NE 5 to NE 6 and other questions

Post by dmingay »

Thinking about upgrading to a NE6 - mainly due to the layering options, extra memory and seamless transitions. But have a few questions before I take the plunge:
  • Can you transfer your sounds over from a NE 5 to the NE 6? I've created many custom sounds, samples and set lists!
  • Has the Clav sound been improved? I try and copy the early Stevie Wonder stuff (don't laugh!), but aside from the musical challenges, the Clav sounds just sound weak and flat. I hope they're improved.
  • What do other people think are the biggest improvements with the NE 6?

The clav samples on the 6 are the same as they have been. But they restored most of the clav EQ options that disappeared from the 5.

I doubt you'll be able to bring NE5 programs to the NE6, Nord generally does not support that (and the NE5 doesn't have set lists, though you can do something similar with Organize). You can bring in your custom samples, though.

To me, biggest advantages over the 5 would be seamless transitions and more sample memory. And possibly the compatibility with the new Sample Library 3 data format, though so far, I'm not aware of any concrete advantages it offers. If, as has been discussed, it eventually allows you to store certain default parameters with the sample (i.e. envelope settings), that would be very useful.

For me, the extra split/layer functions don't seem too useful. You still have just one split point, and you still can only employ one sound that is not a piano or organ. Really, on the E5, how often have you ever wished you could layer an additional sound (either on top, bottom, or both), when that one sound also had to not be from one of the two sections you were already using? Eh. And I happen to actually prefer the assignment by location (Upper, Lower) rather than assignment by instrument (Piano, Organ, Synth) approach, though I understand that some may find the latter to be simpler. Related to that, the 6 loses some MIDI functionality than the 5 had.

On the Clavinet, I’ve found this for getting useful clav sounds out of the Electro 5:

Sorry if this has been asked before: is there any (significant) difference in organ section between E5 and E6? Thanks!

Yes. Discussed part way into the thread at nord-electro-forum-f9/which-electro-t15820.html
Also, you can compare the two manuals to see which options they have removed.

So, I just got my E6 and overall I like it a lot. Having said that, I’m kinda disappointed with the B3 settings vs.those available on the E5 I had before. I use the B3 setting a lot for old rock stuff and I had my E5/B3 sounding old and dirty. Lots of tonewheel crosstalk and heavy key click. The E6 doesn’t seem to include these options to the degree the E5 did. Am I missing something?

The Electro 6 allows you to adjust the crosstalk (clean, Vintage 1, Vintage 2) and key click (low, normal, high) in the Sound menu.

I understand that and I’ve tried those adjustments per the manual but the E5 went to Vintage 3 (nice and noisy) and the key click seemed more pronounced than on the E6.

Just sayin’

Yes, it looks like they mostly eliminated the same NE5 organ options that they also omitted from the NS3, like "Vintage 3" (which most authentically played the leakage sound even when you weren't playing any notes) and the highest level of key click.
