I'm looking to get a clav sound like the one that comes in at 0:25 in the recording posted above.

I just bought the electro 5 and I love it, but I am new to keyboards in general and and curious about any sounds you guys recommend. I like the funk stuff Herbie does (secrets, thrust).
Funky/psychedelic rhodes and wurli's are also a fave.

I guess what I am asking is: do you edit the factory sounds on the nord with your computer or do you tweak them while messing around on your instrument?

You must load any additional sounds from the Nord library from a computer, (with the Nord Sound Manager) but editing from the instrument is the only way to tweak them. Much more fun anyhow.

The Nords all excel at hands-on tweakability especially in a live situation. Very little panel-diving once you know your way around.

As for sounding like Herbie? Woodshed man woodshed!

Tweak the sounds in real time from the instrument panel 1000%

The NE5 is capable of getting most of these sounds you mention when you engage the right effects (wah on clav for example) and this takes some experimentation with the sounds, effects, but also playing technique.
