By popular request, here's some of what we ended up with after an evening of "one take" recording, warts and all. Yes, we'll record the kick bass better next time, my bad.

This is pretty much how we sound when playing live, which is what we were after. All Grateful Dead-ish stuff.

Edit: for some silly reason clicking on the links directly doesn't work. However, if you right-click on "open link in new tab", works as expected.

Thanks for sharing, Chuck. Just had a chance to listen to a bit of each file as I had a gig last night and am traveling to another gig today. Very clean sound and the group itself has polish and is highly listenable. Congrats! I would imagine you get a great response live. Also, it’s impressive what can be captured with affordable equipment and a bit of work. I’m not familiar with a lot of the Dead catalog, but now I may just dial up a Dead station on Pandora on my drive to the gig.

Finally, love the organ sound on Althea. Is that running through the Vent or is it just the NS3?

Chuck, I also do the audio mixing for our band. I'll second your statement about how painful it is to hear mistakes over and over again while doing the mix - particularly my own. Sometimes if my backup harmony vocal seems off, I set my vocal track at a lower volume in the mix.

I can often tell when listening to another band live does not listen to recordings of themselves - it's not based on how well they play, but whether they have "tics" or oddities in their playing which could be easily fixed if they realized what they sounded like.

@ajstan -- thanks for the kind words. Yes, it's amazing what you can do with humble gear these days. Makes me focus on learning how to use it better vs. buying something better and still not knowing how to use it properly.

While I'm no huge fan of the Dead, I do enjoy the richness of the music, the improvisational style and the fans are the best!

Yes, that was a Vent II on the organ bits.

@harmonizer -- you hit it, the real win here is for the band members to hear what they actually sound like, pick out the bits they don't like, and work to improve. I started with low-end room recordings and saw a bunch of progress. Now we've stepped up to these recordings, and we should see even more progress. Or frustration, as the case may be.

I think it was here that someone said "loudness is a cover for bad band sound". Well, strip away the fog of war with a clean recording, and here's what you actually sound like, warts and all.

I *am* a fan of one-take, everyone-in-the-same-room live recording. No going back to fix stuff, get it better next time :)
