Re: My Excellent Adventure As A Recording Engineer
Hi Chuck,
So, lead guitarist still in the band or not? It wasn't clear in the blog? Maybe he stayed but won't sing anymore?
+1 on the drum shield, we bought one with my old band, tall one, 7 parts and it helped us a lot during practice, way less bleeding...
I understood that your drummer has electronic drums? Is it what you called Synth drums? If yes, why you didn't record all of them via line out instead of keeping normal snare and cymbals?
Bye the way, what is the size of the room, you didn't say it, just for us to see how close (or how far...) you are from each other....

Re: My Excellent Adventure As A Recording Engineer
Very nice, thanks for sharing!
And I second the notion of how great it is these days - so much information and technology available. When I was starting out, the only conceivable way of recording without going to (and paying for) a studio was to mic everything up, reduce bleed as much as possible (which usually meant that the better the recorded sound got, the worse it was in the room), play and hope that this time everybody makes it through without a glaring mistake. How we managed to end up with something that I listen to today and NOT cringe immediately is still a mystery to me...

Don't know about the lead guitarist. The consensus is that he's a bit of a hothead, and will come around before long.
Nice to hear about the drum shields working. Definitely one in my future before long.
The drummer uses electronic drums for kick and toms, real acoustics for snare, cymbals and hi hat. So it's a mix. The electronic snare and cymbals sound, well, digital. None of us like the way they sound.
It's a modest room. We're maybe a few meters away from each other, so mike bleed is an issue.
Cheers!

Nice report/story! i'm the sound guy on some of my bands too, and i know how you must feel.
I have the XR 18 and i love it, just add an external router, that's is the only weak point.

Hey, Chuck - great read as always. I don't see myself recording in the near future, although I might eventually bring a laptop to a gig to capture all the channels off our sound guy's XR 18 and play around with the file. Would be cool to hear some snippets of what you've recorded when you're ready to do so.
