A modest proposal regarding updating older hardware

Postby 23skidoo » 24 Dec 2018, 04:23

Due to recent comments by various persons on this forum voicing discontent with Nord’s decisions regarding providing updates to older hardware (or not) and causing much derailment of otherwise fruitful threads thereby, I propose we all agree to simply ignore such comments. While people certainly have the right to make statements which are completely nonsensical such as desiring hardware upgrades to be magically retroactive or software to apply to wildly different platforms equally well and at the same time, those of us who understand reality can simply choose to gracefully let such nonsense slide rather than engage with it. Absolutely no reply should be given such comments and the thread should continue as if they were not there. That way we do not permit utter baloney to ruin a good and worthwhile conversation.

If people persist in negative speech that is not productive or resulting in a suitable resolution or identified bug, it should be policy to permit at most one, relevant, statement per thread maximum and per forum if they are simply repeating the same argument across multiple threads.

What say ye?

I wholeheartedly agree!

I am a moderator on a forum for users of a specific manufacturer's software, so considerably "cheaper" than any Nord hardware. It can become very boring to keep explaining that it is clearly NOT in the manufacturer's interest to offer updates (to help solve a "problem") to software that is already perhaps several generations "old", assuming such an update was even possible (think OS and hardware changes in the time between the original release of the product and today).

The history of the Nord developments can be compared to that of the PC. Every new generation offers more possibilities and boost in memory allowing for more complicated software (sounds). We all accepted the fact that there is no backwards compatibility.

Hello 23skidoo,

I fully agree with you, having been one of those who stepped into such kind of discussions and, being very annoyed by repeated total irrational comments, became kind of personal in answering which has not been good. I for myself decided exactly what you said - simply ignoring stupid or wrong comments if one does not realize how unreasonable he is arguing after he has been clearly told. So yes, you are absolutely right

Merry Christmas to all of you !!

Although I also get tired of seeing the same question again and again we can't forbid users to ask questions...

Some are new users that really don't know the answer and don't even know it's been asked 7 times already that week.
If there was a well structured FAQ that can easily be referred that's probably the best option for these. Or the ones with more patience can inform them in a nice way. Because these questions will not stop.
Telling them off that they're not allowed to ask or not entitled to their opinion is not the way to go.
Setting up rules for how other members are allowed to answer this type of question will also not fix it.

I agree, on the other hand we actually have a FAQ nord-user-faq.php and it is up to us to improve it (I recently asked our admin to add an entry related to converting programs across different Nord models)

But I wonder: how many of the new (but also old) forumers go there first to search for an answer when it is so much easier to just ask the question, sit down and wait for someone's goodwill to reply... ? I don' mean this is applicable to all, Itks not my attitude to generalize, but I am afraid that's what many actually think and do.

Worth noting that what prompted this thread was a recent outburst of negativity not from newbies, but old-timers (I include myself), who are fully aware of what has been talked about ad nauseam in the past.

I think most newcomers have found the forum whilst looking for a specific answer to a specific question, and since searching is rather difficult they just post the question instead.
So if non-newcomers actually keep the FAQ up to date and refer to it when the occasion arises, then it would be put into good use and people would go there to find answers.
Win-win... But it requires a little work and coordination...

Closed questions like "why don't they add more memory" or "Why isn't it possible to transfer programs across boards" where there are exhaustive technical answers would also be helped by an extensive FAQ also in these cases. If there is a technically exhaustive answer to be had that is referred to in the threads there is no need to discuss that topic again and again. It's answered...

Open questions like product placement decisions from Nord, wishlists for the next model and speculation on when it will come cannot be exhaustively answered, and although some are very persistent with their view, this is the type of thing forums like this are for. People are different - some like to chat away and some like topics (on and off line) to be factual and stringent.
If You don't like the topic - skip to the next one. If You don't understand the person - maybe You're just different. Everything is not for everyone...

Do you think there will be an OS update for Nord Stage 2 bringing seamless transition ?

No, they would have already done if it was planned/possible (and this discussion is not about that anyway)

PS: were you serious or kidding? :D
