Vibrato sync across layers?

Postby skylerocean » 06 Nov 2020, 22:19

Does anyone else feel like the vibrato on the Wave 2 aren't synced up when you have multiple layers active?

Forgive me if I'm not using the correct terminology, but it sounds like i get a "chorus" effect on the vibratos across multiple layers, rather than the vibrato being in sync with each other. When I try to do this on my prophet 6 with the LFO it seems to work as intended with both oscillators using vibrato as one, but I'm having a hard time recreating that effect on the wave 2.

When I use the LFO like I do on the prophet, I get the sound that I'm looking for. The vibrato just has a different sound to me, which is frustrating because I want to use the LFO to modulate other sounds.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this just how the vibrato functions on the Wave 2?

Vibrato sync across layers?

I just tested this and I think you are correct and this might be a bug. I set three layers (init saw wave) to the same Vibrato settings (tried the presets and the wheel). Each of them alone sounded fine, but all of them together indeed sounded out sync and out of tune. I re-tested the main LFO and it seems to work as it should, all layers are in sync when grouping them and controlling them with the LFO-

I just filed a report with Nord Tech Support, let's see what they say-

Oh wow! Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one with the issue.

At first I just thought thats just "the way it is" but I think it could sound so much better if they stayed in sync. Thank you!!!

Oh and im on the current os 1.20

That's because the Prophet 6 doesn't have layers, so the comparison isn't clear to me.
You might be using 2 oscillators on the prophet 6 but their pitch is modulated by the same lfo being triggered at the same time. With the Wave 2, each layer is its onw thing. Question is - is there a way to key sync the layers.

Yeah, this is one of my nitpicks with the layer system on the Wave 2, and it becomes unclear to me how/if this changes if layers are set to Global. If I have two layers set to global reverb, are there two reverbs with exactly the same settings being used for each layer, or are they sharing a global reverb? Same with the effects, distortion, etc. Something about the layer system isn't sitting well with me, and the best way to describe it is it feels like there's no glue holding them together. I wish we had some master effects but I guess thats the concept with global, but it just doesn't feel the same to me.

Also shouldn't both the layers, even if they're on their own, be responding to the vibrato the same way, since its basically a global parameter?

Not sure what you mean by Global layer.

You can have master effects. Simply set some layers to Group, and then do the same for the reverb. One reverb will affect both layers at the same time in the same way.

Recieved this response from Nord Support today. Looks like it is probably in the design:

Hi dj,

Apologies for the lack of response - still confirming a few details regarding this behaviour with Nord. I believe that this is something inherent in the design on the Nord Wave 2's synthesis engine. But I am waiting on a response to confirm.

Does that mean it's the desired sound? It just sounds weird to my ears...
