A wish for Nord Wave OS upgrade

The feature request:

This feature would remove a LOT of frustration for every Nord Wave owner to who i talked to over the years. It is about MOD ENV destination. A request is: to have one additional destination -> to both OSC1 and OSC2 at the same time.

Why this feature:

  • Because it would be finally possible to do proper FM synthesis with both oscillators!! As we all know, Nord Wave has modulation envelope routed to SHAPE2 only. This cripples the synth to only one useful FM oscillator per slot. I talk about classic FM patches of which 95% require an envelope, instead of an LFO (which is what Wave unfortunately gave us).
  • Second benefit, it would be finally possible to use AD/AR envelope to do classic Sync Osc sweeps. Although it is possible to use LFO2 saw waveform in SINGLE mode to achieve the sync down effect, it is not possible to have different attack and decay rate (if you use triangle LFO) for different kind of Osc Sync effects.
  • Third benefit, it would be finally possible to have PWM and all other effects related to SHAPE knob to be controlled by AD envelope on both OSCs at the same time.

All this is achieved by one single additional Mod Envelope slot that is routed routed to OSC1 and 2. Not to mention how much the machine gains soundwise!

I am aware of the technical problem - the lack of label on the front panel showing OSC1 and OSC2 in the MOD ENV slot destination. However there are a few options available to overcome this. For example, a new "slot" can be indicated to user by either making SHAPE2 triangle led blink (indicating destination is now to both SHAPE1 and SHAPE2) or, if that is not possible, simply by turning all triangle LEDs off in MOD ENV destination list. That would then indicate to the user that SHAPE1 and SHAPE2 are now set at destinations.

Update to the story:

Ok, just got reply from Kristofer from Clavia. As you may know, company's policy is that it can't discuss on future products so he was not able to give me direct answer - if and when will there be upgrade to the OS. But he let me know they actually do listen and read every email they receive. (Actually one of the reasons why i love Clavia and no longer buy gear from the big three).

Anyway, I hope I'm not the only synth freak / maniac around here, and that others are interested in this simple (but effective) upgrade. While contacting them, i've also reported a bug that I've discovered about one of the mod env destinations (bug report here). It is more than minor issue, which in a way gives me hope, they might come up with the OS upgrade after all.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!

You know, i wouldn't ask for anything, but the the sound of Nord Wave is just phucking phenomenal! It would be pity not to have this additional feature on such awesome sounding machine. It is already cult machine now that it has been discontinued. This would just make it uber-cool.

This comment comes from a synth freak. I own a shitload of synths including classics like JP-8, Prophet 5, OB-8, OB-X, MKS-80, Andromeda, Pro One, SH-2, SH-3a, SH-5, OB-1, CS-15, CS-30, MonoPoly, MS-20, Juno 60, Moog Voyager OS, Prophet VS and many more... I believe i know how to recognize a great sounding machine. Nord Wave is definitely one of them. Hence why i went that far to contact Clavia and ask for the feature. If they won't do it, we'll have to hire a hacker for the job. ;)

Don Solaris, on behalf of all Wave users, thank you.

I'm also displeased with the issue that we are unable to use the Mod Env on both oscillators. Not to the extent that I'm angry, as I'm sure a lot of people aren't (it's a difficult thing to get angry over), but it does make me wish Clavia would let us know about future OS upgrades. Hopefully it'll be released with the Lead A1.
You did a great thing about contacting Clavia, and in turn they did a great thing by writing back.

Came with a backup plan. If they don't come with the update any-time soon, once a month each of us should point them to this thread. Until they get tired of it and come with the patch (and fix that bug as well!). :)

Is the missing destination a feature or a bug?
I hope they fix that but I do not like at all the idea of pestering Clavia with requests "until they get tired".
That will only annoy them and make any future communications more difficult.

Why certainly.

I was being a bit sarcastic, hence the smile in my post.

Wish they fix the bug, though. It's a serious one.

The fact that an idea was well received does not make it mandatory. It's a nice feature request. Hope we'll see it one day, but I guess it will occur in a new synth, not as an OS upgrade in that good fellow Nord Wave. We all dream sometimes ;)

Yeah. Unfortunately so. I'll wait till summer, then my Wave probably goes away.

I'll go with the Lead 2X. Always liked its sound. And no bugs neither. :D
