Nord Wave 2 high trigger point? (for controlling organs)

Postby JVSalazar » 15 Feb 2022, 21:02

Since the Wave 2 has a waterfall keybed with action very similar to a Nord Electro, I'm considering purchasing one and pairing it with a desktop organ module (a Crumar Mojo Desktop for example), so I wouldn't need to use another board for organ duties when needed.

The action itself is fine with me, but one lingering question I have is if the keybed has a high trigger point and if it can send this through MIDI. If not, does anyone have experience with using the Wave 2 as an organ controller and could comment on how the keybed performs controlling an organ? Maybe not having a high trigger is inconsequential with all things considered?...

No, NW2 does not support high-trigger afaik, but it shouldn't be a problem to use it as an organ controller even without that feature, considering also that some virtual Hammond clones use NoteOn velocity as an input for "9 key contacts simulation" (the fact that original Hammond has 9 distinct contacts per key/drawbar, e.g. VB3 does if I remember well and so Mojo module too I'd say) and in that case not using high trigger is maybe a plus rather than a limitation.

My knowledge of MIDI is pretty rudimentary - why would the high trigger be worse in this situation?

Because that mode implies transmitting a fixed velocity, since this is measured by the time between high and low contact closure, not being obviously able to calculate it.

Well, does the keyboard itself physically not support this or would it just need to be added in software?
I've not played organ sounds with the Wave2 but the action is certainly heavier and deeper than a real B3. If that does not matter to you then it should work well, keeping in mind the lack of the higher trigger point.

I use my wave 2 as a MIDI for the organ on my HA stage 3 and LOVE it. Sound great, velocity is great. LOVE the waterfall keybed.
