I don't see the problem in discussing Clavia's recent take on synth-oriented products...
Which in my opinion and of a few of people here has been ill-advised

But since elitism has been brought to the table. I will refrain from discussing any further.

i think the main point is the name, wave 2, that triggers specific hopes in every wave owner including myself.
but here there is almost nothing of the spirit and heritage of the original wave....

is they called this keyboard as "Stage 3 SE" (like iphone SE) nobody would complain probabily.

but to me the wave 2 should have been something nearer to a Prophet X approach than to a Stage

I really don't understand how some people like to complain when we have heard nothing from this new board yet. It's easy to make conclusions just by reading some specs, but how on earth can someone have a strong opinion before laying his hands on one? there is not even a demo video online....I thing we should focus on things we CAN do with this machine and not on those we can not, that where creativity comes from.

I would like to know what can be done with a sample on the instrument itself. Using it as oscillator wave obviously, filtering etc... But applying FM, or other "sample-manipulation"? Go a bit "crazy" on the fly?

From the official site:
"Use the embedded sample presets for instantly playable dynamic sounds or sculpt your own sound from scratch with the "Raw Samp" mode"

What does "osc control" knob do when having samples selected?

Really, as a SYNTH sound designer i want to modulate stuff, i want to make sounds that evolve over time, my most used tools for that is LFO's, S/H, FM, Keyboard Follow, Aftertouch and Modwheel.

Lets see:

Nord Modular G2, we just about had it all, sky was the limit.

Nord Lead 3, we got a typical VA for that time, 2 LFO, Mod Env, ADSR on AMP and Filter, FM, Dual Filter, Stereo Unison which could be tailored to your needs.

Nord Lead 2X, an improved version of the Nord Lead 2, this is the synth with the most snappy envelopes of all Nords.

Nord Wave, a huge step up from Nord Lead 3, we got sample import, FX, Single Cycle waveforms and PM, FM modulation of samples. We lost arpeggio, 2 layers and Split.

Nord Lead 4, we got the 2 layers back, we kept single cycle waveforms, we got impulse morph, chord memory, pattern arp, the FX section became just weird. We lost ping pong delay, FM was hugely simplyfied. We lost Keyboard modulation. We lost snappy envelopes. We lost dual Filters.

Nord Lead A1, we got useful FX section back but lost the following on the way here, lost SUSTAIN, LFO, Chord Memory, Pattern Arp, Old FM and PM, Keyboard Modulation, Snappy envelopes, Dual filter. Second free oscillator. Impulse morph.

Nord Wave 2, we get programable arp, but we lost on the way getting here, LFO ability to be used as an envelope, lost 1 LFO, lost Chord Memory, lost old FM & PM, lost keyboard modulation, lost snappy envelopes, lost dual filter, lost second free oscillator, lost ability to modulate samples with FM.

Really, thats how i see it, they deliver 1 !!!!! new thing to the plate, programable arp and tons of features have been lost on the way getting here.

Yep, i'm a synth guy, not a piano player. :)

Indeed, they addressed a lot of issues I had with the previous Nord synths but it still seems to use the Lead A1 oscillator layout which is ridiculous. Even for classic monophonic patches that layout is limiting.
For example on the Stage you can't direct the LFO to modulate pitch while also having detune, sync, pulse width or any of the other things. That is just unexcuseable to me. If it will be the same here it will be an automatic pass. I am hoping that is not the case.

I don't get the negativity about the negativity! I'm delighted that Nord exist and use their instruments day in, day out. I've bought five of their products - three new from retailers - and have a particular love of the Wave. Clearly this new sort-of Wave is not actually out yet (March seems to be the date?) and detailed specs are not clear, but I don't see why it's not reasonable to express disappointment at what seems to be on offer.

This is the nub of it for me. Yes, I'd prefer the 4-octave form factor (or a rack) for reasons of space, but it's the loss of fundamental synthesis capability that is galling. And sure, you can say that take it for what it is - there will be new possibilities on offer. But the thing is that Clavia Nord are giving these things sequential names - just like Apple iPhones. And yet you don't see Apple removing key attributes from one phone to the next. If this thing was called something else fair enough. But - for me - it should be following on and augmenting the original Wave, especially the sample manipulation aspects. Am sure it will have good things about it, but I had hoped for a Wave 2 for many years, had seen the discussion on here wishing for the same but thinking it would never happen. And then this unexpected treat - followed, for me at least, by the sinking realisation that it isn't what I hoped for.

Quick question, and sorry if it's a dumb one, but I cannot find this info anywhere...

Will The Nord Wave 2 use stereo or mono samples? I downloaded the Sample Editor 3 and loaded a stereo sample into it. And it looks like it is working with it, but for all I know, it is just using the left side and ignoring the right? Does anyone know for certain?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Lots of samples in the Nord library are stereo. I don't think they've ever really listed that as a specification because the software creates them and there are lots on the website. You should be good to go!
