Steel Drums

Postby mididiot » 23 Mar 2015, 18:41

I wasn't satisfied with the current steel drums I found. So I made my own and will share.
Comments are welcome.

I had a steel drum sample in Logic. So I sampled it from C2 to C6 in 5 semitone intervals at 100 velocity. Export audio as a 16 bit Wav file.
I created a template in Logic that I can use for any of my soft synths or outboard gear.
Then load them in Nord Sample editor or go from there.

Hi Mididiot,

Fourths, you say? That sounds pretty darn good, especially for a sound as complex in timbre as a steel drum. We can throw away all the other steel drums now!

And thanks for including a clean bar of your rhythm track at the beginning! That rim has a nice crack to it! ;-)

Bless,

Pablo

After I add the steel drum sound to my NS2, how do I bring it up as a new sound? I can navigate to the sample, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to give it a "clean" start so that it sounds like the mp3 file. Hope this question makes sense, thanks.

Initialize the synth section, then load the sample in the oscillator section.

Thanks, I can do that part, but it seems like certain settings don't initialize and are carried over from the previous sample. Like reverb and other stuff. Is there a way to completely init a patch? I've gone through the manual quite a bit trying to understand this part. Thanks!

Not that I am aware of, reverb and other effects which are outside the synth section need to be switched off manually.

My way to do it:
I made a program (in my case D 1:1 - easy to remember for an old guy) and set all things on A and B slot to initial values (synth init but also organ, piano, effect section, reverb etc.) and the synth source switch to a sample (e.g. 100). Then I store it permanently.
When I want to test a new sample from this fabulous platform or from Nord I load the sample to a free place and insert the sample number into the program. Sometimes it makes sense to compare an old sample with a new one (e.g. this nice steel drum) I put the new sample in slot A and the old sample in slot B. I never store that program - so its always the initial config. Very simple but practical.
