I absolutely dread using the sample editor... I think it badly needs a proper update, ie. rewritten again.

Here's my gripes with it:

It does not remember last file location, have to navigate with each and every file operation. V. Annoying, wastes time.
No drag and drop import of samples.
In importing samples, decides it knows best setting arbitrary sample start points. I want 0.0ms unless I specify otherwise. Quite annoying, and wastes time.
In importing samples, arbitrarily sets up loop points for me. I don’t want a loop unless I specify. Quite annoying, and wastes time.
[Still have to use sample converter as separate operation, adds extra stage to every creation of samples. Very annoying, and wastes time.]
Setting up silent samples confuses the app and leads to error messages on export. This ought to be straightforward.
Fit and finish very poor - Some controls don’t fit in the window. See attached image. No scroll bars. UI design clumsy. Low resolution, pixelated (non retina) app and file dialogs. Not annoying, but betrays it’s an application with very ageing code.
I could go on...

I'm not holding my breath for an update soon, but if it gets much older, something's got to give...

Hi everyone.

Appreciate this is an old thread but as a new Nord user I’m on a steep learning curve with regards to using my Electro 6D and how sounds are organised etc.

I’d be interested to know if there are any ‘in depth’ tutorials regarding using the Sample Editor?

Growing up in the 60’s/70’s the Mellotron/Chamberlin were the main samplers of the time and being tape based I guess the recording of the sounds was vastly different to how they are recorded now. The 80’s and a certain company called Akai changed all that (a Fairlight or Synclavier we’re only a dream). However, whilst I experienced and enjoyed the music that was created on these instruments I never took much interest in how they achieved the results, I used synths a lot so settled for sounds that others had created. If that sounds selfish it’s not meant to be. Unless one programmed sounds from scratch - which is time consuming but exciting then the stock sounds that came with the keyboard were the only ones one could use. I often altered basic patches to get the sound I wanted but there was no forum then to share them with anyone.

So for me I would really appreciate someone talking me through the process end to end of sampling a sound, manipulating and editing it in the Sample Editor and transferring it to the Electro as a ‘polished’ sample.

BTW a certain English musician/composer funded the development of the Birotron an alternative to the Mellotron/Chamberlin, see this article

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birotron

Thanks to you all for sharing your hints and tips. Greatly appreciated.

HI Eric, have you already read the NSE Manual and seen the tutorial videos available on NSE page of Nord Keyboards website?
They should provide all you need, at least to start.

Hi Maxpiano thanks for replying. :thanks:

I’ve got a copy of the NSE manual and it’s very helpful, however it doesn’t explain how a single sample is assigned to a range and how to ensure that it covers the whole keyboard E to E for example. What I have achieved so far is by trial and error rather than what I have read. Also, I understand what the root note of a sample is but there is no explanation as to what the upper note is or what range this covers. If you could answers these I’d be grateful as it would further my understanding.

Aside from that experimentation is the order of the day for me I think :?:

Hi all!

Listening to the sample library 3.0, I think the weakest part is the synth section

Too many iconic synth sounds missing!

- Arp Pro Soloist. In that alone we could have a dozen of different sounds. Think about Tony Banks from Genesis in the 70s. "Cinema Show" and "In The Cage" are 2 great examples.
- Yamaha CS 80. Only a pair of sounds currently on the library. And they don't quite sound like CS 80. Listen to classic Vangelis songs like "To The Unknown Man", "l'Enfant", "Hymne", "Chariots of Fire", etc.
- Mini Moog. We could have about 20 great iconic sounds from it!. Think Gary Numan "Cars", ELP "Lucky Man", Pink Floyd "Any Colour You Like", "Brian Damage", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", etc
- EMS VC3. Pink Floyd "On The Run", The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again", Jean Michel Jarre (think about the iconic wind noises), and many others
- RMI Harmonic Synthesizer. Jean Michel Jarre "Oxygene 4".
- Oberheim OB 8. The Cars "Drive" (layered with Jupiter 6 and DX7).
- Arp Oddysey. Another classic synth with many examples. Abba "Gimme Gimme Gimme" comes to mind

Also missing some Lyle Mays like sounds, the Jean Luc Ponty synclavier sounds, etc

I will repeat my ideas maybe they will be accepted by Clavia for better Sound Manager/ Sample Editor functions

1. Assighning a sample for ONE KEY only without stretch and there will be no need to use silent samples.

2. DRUG / DROP function for adding WAV files.

3. Renaming samples inside of the Sound Editor
Is not possible after transeferring them into Nord .
Not convenient at all.

4. Possibility of INSERTING program/sample/song without replacing with places of older program but rather mooving whole sound list one number Up.

(Now whole organizing thing for Samples and Programs is a NIGHTMARE when i prep for the gig )

Hmm! :?: Not sure if Nord would implement a Drug/Drop facility in their software
