Is it possible to convert samples for NS3 ?

Postby Sandor Matyas » 25 Jul 2019, 08:31

Hello!

I am a new NS3 user and I downloaded a few samples NS Classic and NS2 samples from this forum and uploaded them in my NS3.
When I was transfering them from my PC into the NS3, i got a message that they will be automatically converted to be compatible with the NS3.
When trying out the samples, they completely sounded different.
Is there a possibility to convert these samples to be compatible with NS3 without loosing quality of the sounds ?
Thank you.

Hi, I am afraid you are confusing "Programs" with "samples" (since NS Classic cannot use samples, anyway programs of a specific model cannot be converted to another model's, due to structural differences across them).

Samples instead are files with the extension .nsmp or .nsmp2 and those are converted automatically to .nsmp3 (NS3 format) by the Nord Sound Manager when you load them into the keyboard. They may sound different as the synth section and DA converters+audio output of NS3 are different compared to NS2's, there is not much you can do about that other than tweak them using NS3 on board EQ, effects and synth controls.

PS: if you are comparing with the audio examples posted by the sample author, they can sound different as well if the sample was processed or made part of a Program (with synth and effects settings, which are not part of .nsmp) before recording, so don't take that audio as a "must sound like that" thing.

Thank you for your quick reaction. So this means that I should search for specific NS3 (.nsmp3 extention) samples...

No, as stated above, you CAN use the nsmp and nsmp2 samples. But you will have to tweak the settings like attack, release and effects.
And the same goes for nsmp3 samples by the way.

A sample is just a dumb wav file. You use the possibilities of your Stage 3 to make it sound good/better/more realistic.
