Deep Purple "Hush" Wolf Howling Sample

Postby ejwalker » 12 Mar 2022, 19:31

Hello - I'm playing Deep Purple's Hush on a NS3 and would love to program the sound of the wolf howling at the beginning of Hush into my board. I gave it a try on my own, but get stuck trying to pull out the part of the Hush mp3 that I want.

Does anyone have a sample of the Hush Wolf Howling they can share? Or, provide instructions on how to pull out the beginning of the song (the wolf howl) from an mp3 of the entire song and download just that part to my board?

Thanks!

Easy button: Attached is the intro howl to "Hush" - Using Audacity I saved the clip as a WAV file after applying a little noise reduction and a few other effects. The MP3 is provided as well but the WAV must be used when importing into the Nord Sample Editor 4. EDIT: WAV file in MONO added to reduce sample size.

For the long term: If you don't already have a good audio editing app on your laptop, I would suggest downloading Audacity (free) and working with that. With Audacity you can import audio files and save just the clips that you want as WAV files for importing into the Nord Sample Editor 4. With Audacity you can also record from any laptop audio source.

Some info posted by ajstan:
» 09 Apr 2018, 13:12 If you have a Windows computer and Audacity, you can find the song online, play it, and record it digitally using the Windows WASAPI setting.

https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/tut ... ndows.html

Per the Audacity help page:
"WASAPI loopback has an advantage over stereo mix or similar inputs provided by the soundcard that the capture is entirely digital (rather than converting to analog for playback, then back to digital when Audacity receives it)."

You are amazing!!!! Thank you, oh boy are they going to be impressed. I know not a big deal for us KB geeks but never hurts to go the extra mile and to other people seems harder than it is. This really saves me time as I'm on a time crunch and have quite a few heavy lifting songs. Hush in and of itself is nothing to sneeze at. Still working on the tones, but got the notes.

Might practice using your instructions to come up with thunder and lightning at the beginning of Stormbringer. Kind of a, hey guys, time to start the song, lol. I know it's not in the recording but could also be cool....thanks for the Audacity heads up. Yeah, about time I download the puppy. So good for other things as well.

Thanks again,

Beth

You're welcome! An intro with thunder and lightning would definitely get some attention. With the Nord Sample Editor 4, you can assign the wolf howl, thunder, and lightning to different notes if you want to put them all in one sample as well. Please post whatever you end up putting together. Take care.

No you can’t, you have to use the Nord Sample Editor first to create a Nord sample from the .wav file, then load the Nord sample onto your Nord instrument with either the Sample Editor right after having created it (your Nord has to be connected when using the sample editor), or by saving the sample to your computer and later use Sound Manager to load it

Hi again,

here is a Nord sample of the Hush Wolf sound (both .nsmp and .nsmp3 format). I took the three originals from the song and have put them on C7, C#7 and D7 so you can decide when to play which of the three. Just check it out ....

Hush Wulf.nsmp

Hush Wulf.nsmp3
(740.11 KiB) Downloaded 87 times

P.S. sorry for misspelling the sample name

Nice approach. For folks who want to create their own, they could take the WAV file and set it at a different level for each key, or assign it to one key and use the AMP ENV Velocity to vary the level. The effect on the record works well - folks barely hear the first howl (or not at all), hear the second a little better but not enough, so they crank up the stereo and then the 3rd hits followed by the intro. It guaranteed a powerful beginning.

I just thought splitting it into 3 parts on different keys provides more flexibility, but I also created a "one-key" sample on C7 for the whole three parts of the sound:

Hush Wolf.nsmp
(734.53 KiB) Downloaded 78 times

Hush Wolf.nsmp3
(740.23 KiB) Downloaded 81 times

Here is the wave file I'm using in case someone wants to modify it:

Hush Wolf.wav
(3.83 MiB) Downloaded 88 times

Edit: changes due to missing knowledge about Sample Editor

Thanks for posting the sample; I stopped short of that as I was hoping we'd see a follow-up post with the sample created. Take care.
