Maxwell's Silver Hammer Moog/ Tuesday Afternoon

Post by Ajdepers »

Hey everybody!

Im really interested in getting the moog sound from Maxwells Silver Hammer. To my knowledge, there are no samples of it out there. Also, I am looking for a Moody Blues mellotron. Specifically, the sound in Tuesday Afternoon but I'll take anything. Thanks!

Have you checked the sample library at the Nord site? They might have a mellotron sample there.

There might even be two. ;)
And now for something completely different...

ya i've tried out the "3 violins mellotron" that they suggest to use for Moody Blues. However, the sound it makes is pretty inaccurate (at least for the Moody Blues sound). I tried puting effects on it but I still am not able to recreate it. If anyone knows any combination of effects to recreate the sound that would also be very helpful.

Ya thats were I got it from but it just didn't sound quite right. If you listen to the recording while using the mellotron, the sounds are a different.

I have Mellotron samples from Mike Pinder's Mellotron, and they don't sound exactly right either!

You will need to EQ the sound a bit. Reduce the treble to make the sound a bit more muffled for a start. This the most important thing to do for the Moody Blues sound.

You might find this article interesting: http://www.mikepinder.com/?page_id=159

And this, which shows his Mellotron being restored and explains why the Moody Blues Mellotron sound is different, along with audio examples:

http://kleonard.com/mellotron/vt0304/pindertron3.htm

"When compared to Jerry's Mark I, the sound differences are staggering. If you play 3-violins on Julia, you hear King Crimson with bright violins. On {Mike Pinder's mk2] you hear the Moody Blues with a somewhat compressed and duller sound larger in the lower end. Jerry explained that the other Mellotrons have a built in equalization curve to brighten up the higher end, but the Mike Pinder preamp does not. Thus, the Moody Blues right out of the box."

My first thought on playing around with the Nord Mellotron library is the sounds are more hifi than they were on the original instrument. Some EQing and the right FX will probably go a long way to getting it close.
