As I (re)build my rig I'm putting some thought into this. What I might end up doing, if I can automate it that way, is to have a foot switch that then boosts the output from Gig Performer/XR18 a certain amount and then switching it will return it to its normal level.
I've used volume pedals before and never have found them totally satisfactory.

Hello
For solos, I use a layered piano/organ/synth preset with all of your tips at the same time

What's the problem with volume pedals? I never had any issues with them.
Only thing, I always had models with a fairly long throw (Yamaha FC-7 etc).

Re: Your preferred solo/boost method for Stage 3
Just personal taste. I prefer a static thing that I can set to, say, 3db and then it's always the same. For me, it's too easy to get it wrong going into the solo and then get it wrong again coming out. I also stand when I play which makes it just a bit harder to control a pedal.

Re: Your preferred solo/boost method for Stage 3
I'm with the "use song function to store a predefined solo voice" group. Even if it's the same thing a bit louder, the idea is that you press a button at solo time, and another when it's over. Adjust a bit if it's too hot, not hot enough, etc.
Since 99% of my brain is trying to figure out what to play right before a solo (typically improv), I don't have much brain left to manually adjust things.

I think I have gear issues ....

No specific complaint except I always found it hard to dial it in exactly. Is it slightly too soft, slightly too loud?

I think Song Mode is the new idea I was looking for. Seems like it will work perfectly for me. Thanks everybody.

Re: Your preferred solo/boost method for Stage 3
Well yes with instruments that support the smooth transition that approach (creating a specific Program for the solo boost) works fine, last Nord I owned was a NS2 which didn't so in that case you find soon that you need to be more "creative"
