Using Stage 2 with Roland XV-5050

Postby VINNY » 17 Mar 2015, 18:27

Would anyone here have any experience with this setup? I'm pulling my hair out trying to control this rack mount unit with the external controller bank on the Stage 2.
Is there a way to to set up patches so when I call them up on the Nord it will set the patch on the Roland and it's volume...settings..etc.?
I'm using this in a live setup, so streamlining this is max importance.
Anyone?
Thanks, Vinny

Thanks DJ,
I've taken several shots at this but have made no progress.
The Roland is the only device I'm controlling via MIDI.
I'd like to figure out how I can marry the Nord and the Roland patches to call them up on the Nord, while gigging.
I've been messing around with both, individually. Live, this sucks, as I double on the sax. It's a tightly choreographed piece of work that gets crazy sometimes.
I'm not a real MIDI wiz!

OK, tested this tonight, works fine. Here are the steps. I will use my setup for an example, you can use any channel you like. Connect Midi Out of Stage 2 to Midi in of the 5050.

In the XV 5050, hit the System button and use the dial to scroll to Midi/USB. Hit the cursor key once and use the dial to select Patch RX channel, move the cursor to the channel and select channel 1. That is essentially all you have to do. I don't need to change banks, as I never need more than 128 patches, so this will work for patches 1-128 in any bank you are in.

In the Stage 2, you will need to program the Extern section for each patch, as my patch order is not consecutive in number when I play a gig. Hit Shift+Extern button (system buttons below the display) and you will see a number of parameters. Use the Program Change buttons to navigate the parameters. Set the Mode to Program, Channel to Midi 1, Volume to whatever you like ( I control the volume of my other synths with a pedal) and the Prog Change to the value you want. There are settings for each slot, so make sure they have the same settings. There are a number of other settings for sending bank select, control pedal, etc, which I don't really use. Then, make sure you activate the Extern section in the patch by hitting Shift+ON/OFF button in the actual Extern section. If you want to play the XV 5050 from the Stage 2, then leave the KB zone lights lit. I don't use this on many patches, as I play from the keyboard of the Virus.

This should take care of it, let me know how it works for you.

Hi Vinny,

If you're in the USA or Canada you can call me at work and we can walk through some of this together over the phone. It may not seem nice to say this to someone who's been having problems setting it up, but once you see the light you will discover that it's really quite simple and easy. The EXTERNAL SECTION is truly one of the most remarkable features of the Stage model line (and IMHO of any keyboard out there).

Bless,

Thanks DJ,
I was able to get the Nord to change setting to the Roland. I only problem that remains is I can't figure out how to save the external settings to be able to call it back up.
I will save the settings, change to another sound on the Nord and go back to the original and the Roland goes to the same patch every time, the wrong patch. It seems that everything else is saved, just not the patch on the Roland. Thoughts?
Pablo, thanks for your offer, It's hard for me to be in front of keyboard during your business hours. I'm not giving up, I would like to talk to you and I'll work something out.

Vinny,

You've seen published business hours for me somewhere? If so, they're a made-up fantasy of someone else. My business hours are when I'm at my home studio, which is almost always, though I do frown on getting calls after midnight without prior arrangement. If we have difficulty with that when I step out from time to time, I''ll get you my celll phone number. Evenings, weekends, and usually holidays are NO PROBLEM! The important thing is that you are with your keyuboard when you call.

Perhaps you are sending two program changes on the same channel? One on Slot A and another conflicting one on Slot B? Such that changing A will produce same results every time because the one in B has not been changed? Please call...

Bless,

Pablo

Vinny-

You need to save the Extern settings with each program. This will store the programmed change so that the patch in the Nord will always bring up the patch in the XV that is designated in the Extern setup for that program.

Give Pablo a call. You will find out that Nords are not only the best keyboards, they have the best Tech Support as well-

Hello Pablo,
I tried to call you yesterday. The number seemed like an office number.
Is there another number that would be more convenient?
Thanks, Vinny

Just a followup note here to document. Vinny's problem is not getting the Roland to recognize program change messages from the Nord -- that's working fine. He's trying to teach the Nord to correctly selecto banks within the Roland, which is of course a function of the Roland's Bank Select scheme. DJ cleverly dodges this issue (thanks for the kind words, btw) by copying his "off-bank" programs to the #1 booting bank of the Roland. Vinny thus has two roads to Nordvana: 1) learn how to copy programs from one bank to another on his Roland, and 2) correctly decipher the midi implementation data in the Roland manual. We played around with it a little on the phone earlier tonight, but it may take a bit more time to achieve success at that.

Anyone with enhanced knowledge of the Roland bank select procedure is invited to offer insight.

Bless,

Pablo
