Hi
I tried to look at it through all kinds of angles, but I can't figure out why my NordStage 2 won't send the master clock to my MIDI gear. I can play the external synthesizers sounds through the keyboard of the NS2 and affect all kinds of other parameters, but it doesn't want to influence its arpeggiator. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Use NordStage2 as master clock with MIDI
Hej. You are doing nothing wrong. The Stage 2 can only receive MIDI clock signals - i know it is a bummer - but maybe they will implement it in the stage 3...

Re: Use NordStage2 as master clock with MIDI
I see. So where it says System, Clock and then a big O in the "transmitted" column, it basically means it won't transmit the master clock.
Damn, that's lame for such an overall great machine!
Thanks a lot for confirming this, I appreciate!

Re: Use NordStage2 as master clock with MIDI
Hi,
I'm new here but I guess I have the problem. Do I understand you right that the NS2 only receives MIDI clock signals but does pass it on to the next instrument (in my case a Nord Lead A1) via MIDI THRU ?
My setup is a ROLAND BK-7m arranger module which serves as the master, a NS2 and a NL A1. If I connect the ROLAND to both (NS2 and NL A1) via independent MIDI cables both keyboards work perfectly with the clock sync. However if I only connect the NS2 or the NL A1 with the Roland and want to pass on the clock to the next keyboard it doesn't work. If possible I would like to have it connected this way: Roland > NS2 > NL A1. This would allow to e.g. add a nice pad or Fantasy sound of the A1 to my piano sounds of the NS2 via the EXTERN mode of teh NS2. Both keyboards shall be synchronized with the Roland clock.
Do you have a solution for that ?
Thank you so much in advance
Joe

Hi Joe, unfortunately the NS2 can only receive MIDI Clock and will not pass it to its MIDI OUT (there is no THRU connector) even with EXTERN Soft Thru active. You need to use a MIDI Thru box.

Hi Maxpiano,
thank you very much for your prompt response. It'a pity that the MIDI thru doesn't work with the master clock sync.
All the best

Hi Maxpiano,
I already have a MIDI thru box but it has 1 MIDI IN (connected to my Roland's BK-7m MIDI OUT as the clock master) and 5 MIDI OUTS (connected to my NS2, NLA1, ROLAND-JP50, ROLAND FA06 and Korg Krome). All keyboards work best with regard to the master clock. However this setup does not allow me to connect e.g. my NS2 (OUT) to NL1A (IN) in order to add a pad from the NL1A to my NS2 sound. Do you know a solution ?
Thanks

Well in that case you need to handle a more complex MIDI Routing and unless you have/want to use a computer/tablet that could do that for you (at least between A1 and NS2 via USB MIDI) you need a more comprehensive MIDI patchbay, with configurable routing, or use a MIDI Merge before the A1, so that you can merge NS2 OUT MIDI data to BK7's MIDI Clock (from the thru box) at the A1 MIDI IN.

Re: Use NordStage2 as master clock with MIDI
I think you could do this with a MIDI Merge box and a MIDI splitter box (or a Y MIDI cable 1 input 2 output, although it might work, Y cables are never a good idea, specially merging ones). Then try connecting one of the split signals from the roland output to the NS2, the other split output from the Roland to the merge box. Those merge boxes have 2 inputs and 1 output. The other input into the merge box comes from the NS2 MIDI output and the output of the merge box goes to the the A1 input (that is, the A1 receives the merged version of the Roland+NS2 and the NS2 only from the Roland). You might have to set the soft thru in the NS to OFF, but I cannot remember how (or if) that can be done.
There might be some hardware that can do splitting and merging, but nothing comes to mind right now.
