Can you use both the midi in and out as well as the usb cable for a ipad all at the same time?
using a korg kronos and my stage 3 i have done this along with a ipad and usb camera card connected to the nord stage 3 .
it all works except that the ipad will not change programs. the ipad does have the ability to do this and i have using the ext section but i have to manualy change the program on the nord.
does midi supersede usb? are all active at once?
my kronos is the master and controls the nord . all is well but the ipad wont change even if it is programmed to the correct msb /lsb and prog number ?

I haven't used an identical setup to what you describe, but as far as I know, the USB and DIN MIDI connections work in parallel.

I'm not sure I quite follow your setup, but are you saying that you are playing the iPad from the Stage using the USB connection, and that the iPad is not able to change program, even if you try to send PC messages via the Extern section?

One simple thing to try is to remove the Kronos temporarily from the setup (although I very much doubt that has an effect) and see if you can then change programs on the iPad. If not -- and that's maybe the most likely cause -- then maybe you don't send the correct MIDI messages from the Nord to the iPad. Have you tried putting some kind of MIDI Monitor onto the Nord, to check what you send out (could even be on a computer)?

Note that messages from the Kronos are NOT passed through the Nord; you have to set up the Nord to send messages to the iPad.

ipad?, .i have to turn the external program change dial to get the ipad to work , and also wierd is it seems to have to be turned 1 pgm number back or forward to call up the ipad?

Nord Stage does not support a full MIDI Thru (the Extern section Soft Thru applies only to external notes and a fe control changes matching its channel), as you can read in its manual, so there is no other option with that setup of yours.

Have you considered changing your setup so that both Kronos and Nord connect to the iPad directly and iPad manages the routing between the two and Program Change distribution?

Note: Program Change in MIDI apps and HW visualizations can use 2 different standards 0-127 (the true hex value sent) or 1-128, but once you know "which uses which" it is not that big an issue to make different units exchange PCs properly)
