I'm getting back into gigging with just my NS2 after using a Mainstage rig for a while. In doing this, I'm rediscovering the frustration of the limited size of the piano memory (which is what drove me to use a Mainstage rig in the first place). I'm just wondering how other NS2 users like to allocate your piano sample memory? (What pianos and sizes do you typically have loaded on your NS2?) 99% of the sounds I use on a typical gig are piano (grand and upright), clav, rhodes, wurly, and CP80. (I use a separate board for B3 sounds for a couple of different reasons.) I am mostly happy with the stock pianos, although I like to add the Italian Grand, a couple of different uprights, and I love the Amped CP80.
I'd love to hear some of your strategies for getting maximum bang for the buck in the piano section. Are there certain instruments that you find the small samples to be fine for, or some that you think the Large or XL makes a big difference on?
Thanks!
Dave

Re: Suggestions for maximixing NS2 piano memory allocation
For live playing with what is basically a rock band, I'd stick with mostly Small. Pretty much the only advantages of Medium and Large are in the string resonances you would be unlikely to hear in that context anyway. However, the XL versions do sound more significantly different (not always better even if more faithful to the original piano... that's a matter of taste). So if there are one or two go-to pianos where you really prefer the overall sound of the XL, I'd try to fit them in.
As for the larger "amped" EPs, you could also try temporarily loading the "amped" and "unamped" versions for comparison, and to the extent you like the "amped" better, you may find that you can tweak the "unamped" version to get it sounding close enough to the "amped", using EQ and the amp simulations/overdrive. So that might save you some space too.

Those are great suggestions and a very good point about the benefits of the Large and XL versions not being obvious in a rock band context... thanks!

Re: Suggestions for maximixing NS2 piano memory allocation
Also - do take the time to listen to the newer piano sounds, if you haven't for a while. For example, the Amber upright (released a year ago) gets a LOT of love on these forums, and works really well for a wide variety of situations. Add your favourite grand, and a couple of others depending what you play (e.g. the Mellow upright if you do moody / mellow songs; one of the newer Rhodes), and you're good to go. Somehow I find some of the newer pianos are more versatile, hence I change sounds less often and only use a couple of sounds, and don't have the same need to fill the memory with multiple sounds. Anyone else??
On the downside, the new sounds generally have bigger file sizes :-/

Re: Suggestions for maximixing NS2 piano memory allocation
I suggested in another thread to have a tool that would help us with the proposed different feasible piano combinations based on the memory size compared to the total 500M.
I have complied all the files with their size; just need some little thinking (say when 1 Yamaha C7 version is selected, no use in proposing the other versions. selection by categories : PIano/EP...) and skilled programming to come out with something interesting.
Makes even more sense for EX users.
