Hi all,
Does string resonance really work on NS3? Maybe I'm hard of hearing but cannot tell any difference if its on or off.

Re: String resonance
Hi Pete,
Maybe this wil help : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqWa2M-e07Y
It's about the differences in piano-sample sizes but touches on string resonance too.
Very informative channel !

Re: String resonance
It is definitely very subtle. I find I can hear it best with the pedal held down and reverb off. Try this:
- put on a good pair of headphones
- in the sound menu, turn the string resonance all the way up to +6
- turn off reverb
- load a L or XL size piano
- set the piano eq to bright, and boost the treble and mid-range eq a bit in the eq section
- make sure string resonance is on
- hold down the sustain pedal and play a complex chord, like a m11 cluster
- while still depressing the keys, release the pedal. You should hear the string resonance disappear.
- compare the sound of the chord with and without the pedal. You’ll find that with the pedal there is a swirly sort of depth to the sound.
It’s still very subtle, but hopefully you should be able to hear it better this way.

Re: String resonance
If you load a piano with string resonance (like L or XL, but not S) and enable the feature, then it works very well. In fact, I find it quite prominent at the default setting, so it may be a question of what you're listening for our expecting.peteques wrote:Hi all,

Sympathetic resonance is easier to hear, maybe. Push down eg C4 without making a sound, then play C3 hard and let it go immediately while holding the C4 an octave above down still - you will now hear the C4 ring.
Otherwise do as suggested above, and use headphones to listen to your playing. But I would maybe play single notes rather than chords to hear the effect clearly.
You could also compare playing with and without the feature enable, listening for differences immediately after each other.

Re: String resonance
If you're not hearing string resonance, then either you're expecting something different, your hearing has been compromised, or you're using headphones or speakers that are below the quality of an iPad's built-in speaker.
String resonance is caused by the sympathetic vibration of strings for notes other than the one being played when the damper pedal is pressed.
A good example starts around the 10:00 mark of the video that RichardG shared. I can hear the effect on my iPad's speaker:
https://youtu.be/WqWa2M-e07Y?t=598
You can hear it yourself just by playing a single note with an M, L or XL piano selected, no effects or EQ needed. Play and hold a note, let's use C6. If String Resonance is off, the note sounds the same whether the damper pedal is pressed or if you hold the note without the damper pedal. If String Resonance is on, you will hear the echoing and vibration of other strings when you play the note with the damper pedal pressed. The harder you hit the note, the more resonance you will hear.

Re: String resonance
You can hear it absolutely Check out “my-keys-to-music” where you can see and hear how it’s invoked. You can hear the difference above E5 when switching string resonance off and on.
