Sound Breakdown
I turn on and play as normal. After 5 minutes, loud high pitched electrical pinging, almost like a fax machine sound, begins. Intermittent, then more frequently. It gets so bad I turn off. Sometimes can start again and it also happens again. Next step I turn on. It says invalid os - update mode ready. I have to reinstall. It takes about an hour to do this. This has happened twice. With about a week in between breakdowns. Any ideas about what is wrong?
Thank youa

Re: Sound Breakdown
Now I am trying to update again, but get the message erasing . . . erase error. Sadness.

Re: Sound Breakdown
You are going to want to seek service on that instrument. You don't mention what model you are playing, or how new/old, but it seems that it is suffering from a hardware issue. Software operations will not clear a hardware issue.

Some things that might help your (Nord Distributor) service technician:littlephatty wrote:I turn on and play as normal. Is the loud high-pitched pinging sound coming from the body of the board itself or through the audio path? --Maybe turn down audio gain to zero to check if the noise originates from the board hardware.
If the noise comes from the hardware itself, there is a good chance the problem is power supply related. The warm-up time-to-failure pathology supports this idea.
If the sound is in the audio path, it could be power, audio/analog or digital -- pretty much anything in other words, and none good.
Has it ever said "invalid os", but actually worked afterwards without reinstalling? --If you ever see a good result after "invalid os"? -Perhaps leave the board powered down for a few minutes in a cool location. If the board comes up normally, it suggests power-supply as the main culprit. If this is the case, the power supply makes so much (electronic and audible) noise when misbehaving it corrupts normal processor operation.
If you never see a good result after "invalid os", it strongly suggests flash memory corruption of the os. This (obviously) never ought to happen, so indicates a major system failure.
If the power supply turns out to be the culprit, try to find out if any of the supply rails exceeded their overvoltage specification during the failure mode (the repair shop will need to check this with an oscilloscope and look for noise up to the bandwidth limit of their 'scope). If this occurred, many components on that rail (or those rails) will like have suffered electrical overstress and will have shortened lifetimes if not terminal damage. If the repair shop confirms an overvoltage condition, they ought to recommend replacing all affected downstream electronics.
I hope this repair goes quickly and smoothly.

Re: Sound Breakdown
i had the same issue - the high pitched pinging sound. i tried to update the OS from 1.72 to the newest release, and things fell apart quickly
first the board said "erase error". then everything froze up. i tried rebooting the board and it now says invalid CAB hdr, and the update software is no longer recognizing the 1.72 OS to build off of. i have the stage 2. its about 5 years old.
