Snap sound with FC7

Postby wes10147 » 08 Jan 2019, 23:18

Hello!

I’m new to Nords and just purchased an NS3 in November. Today I hooked up my Yamaha FC7 to the Control pedal input and noticed that when I move it, the first time I touch it, it makes a snap sound through the amp. I can move it for a while, then if I stop using it for a bit, when I move it again, it makes the same noise. It doesn’t do the same when plugged into the swell port, or any other keyboard. Any ideas?

In your settings, is the control pedal input set to the FC7? Does this effect persist regardless of patch?

Yes I did set it to FC7. It doesn’t happen if the pedal isn’t active (if there’s no morph assigned to it) but it happens with organ and with anything assigned to it. It doesn’t happen at any particular spot in the swing of the pedal.

Likely that’s the sound of whatever control is being morphed by the pedal latching to the pedal position. Check that the pedal is giving smooth outputs (when you are in the settings menu for the pedal you can move it and see the relative percent in real-time - this should smoothly sweep from 0 to 100 with no gaps or lags as you move your foot. If that’s perfect then contact Nord tech support for troubleshooting steps. If not then the problem is with the pedal. Do you have another expression pedal to check against?

This will prolly sound nuts, but it might have something to do with static electricity.
I've rehearsed at many locations in the past few years and a couple of them gave me problems with my FC7 pedal. One guys living room was particularly bad - thick carpeting, winter time - a snapping sound when I first use the pedal / wouldn't work at all till I swept it through a couple times / after working fine for a while, get a drink or take a leak, and it would act up again. Only had that problem at one venue/stage - it was heavily carpeted also.
I know I have read about this situation a couple times before and the consensus was - don't worry about it. You are just generating more static electricity than normal due to environment change.

To follow up, this seems to have just stopped. I did move the cables around a bit on the back of the keyboard, so my guess its was some sort of grounding issue. I have some right angle adapters that are all metal that may have caused it. Thanks for your help though!!
