Hi,
I'm playing the keyboard in a duet, with a drummer only.
When I use a rhodes, I would like to have a bass with more presence.
How would you configure the rhodes to have a good bass presence? 2 layers? Split with different rhodes? only eq? What do you think is the best rhodes sound for this?
Thanks, I'm a bit lost

Re: Rhodes bass
Why not using a synth or sampled bass? Bass guitar style? It´s better suited for that stuff. Do a split, naturally.

Because, i want a rhodes sound. I dont like bass sampled. And a synth bass, sounds very agresive.
I'm looking for a sound like this

Re: Rhodes bass
The album version of the song has a real bass. And it's the only version The Doors ever did, because it was never played live, at least with the original lineup with Morrison.
On stage, Manzarek used a Rhodes Piano Bass, which was basically the last 2 1/2 octaves of a normal Rhodes, although I'm not sure which model.
I think that by trying different Nord Rhodes and playing with EQ, amp simulation and compression, you should be able to get the sound you want.

Re: Rhodes bass
As you have an Electro 5 you are able to split or layer, So another option would be to sample from a Rhodes Bass vst and put it into the Nord sample editor to create a Rhodes Bass Nord sample and use that in a split with your favourite Rhodes piano. Im sure there are a few Vst's you could use, Maybe take a look at Samplesons Fire.

Re: Rhodes bass
From nord site: a new B3 Tone Wheel Bass feature gives you the classic 16' and 8' bass drawbars in the left hand and can even be used with the Piano and Sample section for a thick and meaty bottom

Re: Rhodes bass
I used to play the bass on the Nord Stage in 3-5 piece bands. I found that the Deep Rhodes was my best bet. It sounded full and quite deep. It had some unpleasantly high overtones in the low mids, but, I tried my best to stay out of that area and tried to tame it with EQ. I split the keyboard, routed the LHB to its own output and used a bass amp. HTH.

Re: Rhodes bass
Nice one aL. I'm unashamedly in love with the Rhodes MkV sample for its low end punch. I often use it to record bass part ideas to send to my bass player. To get more punch out of bass sounds with EQ, obviously bumping up the low end helps, but if you have a sample with some pluck or percussive attack, accentuating the upper frequency range (say around 3 - 5kHz) can help to bring it to life. And enough drive to warm the sound, but not distort it too much.

I totally agree. I also found that a little compression (along with some drive to taste, as you suggested) add punch to the sound.
