Restoring Old Backup to Nord Stage 3

Post by russdallen »

Hey y'all - we have Stage 2's, Stage 2 EX, and now a Stage 3 here at my church. I have old backups from years ago that I keep adding and subtracting, making better and backing up and restoring to all our NORDs as time allows. Now that we have a NS3 - I can't seem to get a backup to restore into the NS3.

I updated the firmware in my NS2. Then backed it up.
I changed the file code from .ns2b to .ns3b to see if it would take (which is how I transferred my ns2b to my NS2EX. But it didn't work.

Anyone have any idea how I can restore my NS3 with an old back up from my NS2? I love my patches and sounds and presents. really don't want to overhaul it.

ideas?

Thanks

Russell

You can't, they are different instruments. There isn't currently anyway to transfer Stage 2 programs to a Stage 3.

I will say, the first thing that I did when receiving my NS3C last night was to backup the instrument. It forecasted completion in over an hour. After 30 minutes it Froze. It obviously is not using USB 3.0.

Anyone else experience this slow speed?

You are correct in that it only is USB 2. I haven’t tried backing mine up so I can’t comment on the speed. But there are factory restore files on the Nord website so you probably don’t need to back it up when you first get it?

As any other Nord instrument, using the Nord Sound Manager.

You have a pretty sweet church if you have multiple 2s, 2EX, and a Stage 3. Unfortunately, the posters above are correct. The engines are different, so the instruments can't be copied exactly. Beyond that it isn't possible, it wouldn't be accurate even if it were.

That said, I'll say the switch from a 2 to a 3 was an easy one for me to swallow, because the sounds are soo much better in the 3. It won't totally remove the disappointment that a lot of work will go into recreating patches, but it might soften it some. For me, the new Stage has become an opportunity to enhance patches I enjoyed and was used to by taking them to the next level. I am getting comments regularly (in church as well) on switches I made from the previous synth bass in This is Living, for example, because it sounds so much better for EDM on the Stage 3. The possibilities with this machine...

I hope you find a solution you like!

Yes, the first backup takes a long time. The good news is that moving forward you have the option of just updating the backup file, which only takes a minute or two. Even if you wish to create a new backup file in the same directory, the backup process will copy "cached" information from the previous backup, so it only takes about 5 minutes.

I am not even sure it is USB 2.

The NS2 seems to be USB 1.1, see what lsusb shows:

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0ffc:0021 Clavia DMI AB Nord Stage 2
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 1.10 <------- that is USB 1.1
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
etc...
Given that it takes even longer to back up the NS3 than then NS2 I guess it might also be USB 1.1.
Note that for MIDI (31.25 kbit/s) using USB 1.1 is plenty (12 Mbit/s).
