Replacing Triple Pedal with Roland DP8 or DP10
Hi guys,
thanks to some guys (especially patchi) who checked out the inside functionality of the Nord Triple Pedal (NTP),
my solution for practical stage work is the following:
For me, the NTP was a bit bulky and I was´t using Sostenuto and Soft Pedal functions intensively.
But what I would have liked to use, was the half pedal function and - as a nice gimmick -, the pedal noise.
The DP8 and DP10 are pretty much the same solid quality pedals for about 40€.
Both with a nice little switching/continuous operation mode switch which can easily
change the pedal into an ordinary sustain or e.g. rotor switch.
The DP 10 has a rubber lip/rug on the bottom to avoid it from slipping away.
I´ve thought about the technical stuff and modified my Roland DP 8 /10 in that way to
swap the ring and sleeve wires inside the pedal. This is a very simple soldering job.
In an UNmodified DP8/10 it´s changing from 0 to 10k bewteen tip and sleeve and behaves just the upside down way you´d want it to.
After modification the resistor value between tip and sleeve is now changing from 10k to 0.
TS values 10k to 0
TR values 0 to 10k
RS value is constantly 10k
Now, due to my taste, it works/sounds perfectly, as I wanted it to.
Set the NS3 to NTP mode, adjust the pedal noise the intensity you like.
Half pedaling is happening in just one gradation, not in 3 like with the NTP.
But that´s sufficient for me. I like it.
About 4/5 pressed, the half pedaling is on, 5/5 and you have plain sustain.
You can even stomp on it or release it quickly to have some different pedal noises.
Maybe some of you like that, too,
Best regards,
rabennest

Re: Replacing Triple Pedal with Roland DP8 or DP10
The wiring you have made is anyway incorrect, on NTP the ring is used for sostenuto and soft.... http://www.norduserforum.com/general-no ... t1883.html and with pedal full up you have an open-switch on the Tip while with your wiring you have 10K Ohm (if I remember well the DP8 pot value).
Have you checked what happens to CC64 MIDI data when you use your pedal?

Re: Replacing Triple Pedal with Roland DP8 or DP10
Hi, thanks for your comment/remarks.
I´ve included a screenshot with the midi data sent by pressing the pedal very slowly.
It´s a full movement cycle.
From beginning down to the blue marker it is a ´pressing down´ movement
From there until the end, it´s the pedal ´release´.
The noticable half pedal effect occurs on cc value 64. Greater values are interpreted as pure sustain.
You are right, that it´s touching/concerning also sostenuto values,
but you can´t hear anything of that.
I was talking about my practical soldering modification and the practical effects while playing the gear.
The half pedaling behaviour is also received and processed from my other sound modules, as e.g. the Roland Integra.
No other phenomenons (except the two sostenuto values) are happening, or are relevant to practial playing.
So, I can only tell you, that I appreciate my pedal modification very much from a practical playing point of view.

Can you tell me what are the threads to reverse?

Hello, do you have an ohmmeter/multimeter or a continuity tester? With this you should be able to easily determine which cable is connected to the ring and which to the sleeve, and swap them.

Hi Schorsch and thanks for the reply. I have this tester that I only use to test electrical continuity, but I don't know how to test other values. Do you think it will be okay? Then I don't understand whvat the ring and the sleeve are.

Re: Replacing Triple Pedal with Roland DP8 or DP10
Thanks to both (Schorsch and Maxpiano). I was able to identify the 2 wires to reverse. I wanted to test the pedal for a week to make sure I didn't have the same problem as the korg (which I returned!), Which after a few days was working intermittently. The Roland DP10 works beautifully and pedal noise is always present.
Personally I am not very knowledgeable about electronics, probably, for the Roland, resistance values closer to those of the Triple pedal from Nord .. I can't say! The important thing is to have achieved the goal: to have a pedal noise for only 45 €. Not to be excluded then the removable rubber tongue, which helps a lot not to slide the pedal forward.
