Question about the Extern Function: send program changes

Postby Niekster » 16 May 2019, 19:06

Hey everyone of NSF,

I'm quite new to Nord keyboards, since I've owned my NS3 for only a year. I use it in a cover band and now, for an auxillary keyboard I've adopted a second child; the Yamaha MODX6 (of which I'm equally satisfied).

What I'd like to rely on the most during performances is NS3's 'song mode' for it allows me to play each song directly from the get-go. What I'd like to do is the following: I want the MODX to directly switch to performances coinciding with the programs I use with my NS3. I now use a MIDI-connection in which Nord Stage 3 is Master and the MODX slave.

Let us say that every time I start up program 'A:11: Royal Grand' I want the MODX to automatically switch to USER BANK program no.1.

I figured out how to send program changes using the EXTERN-function (using MSB, LSB & Prog.numb.) and well, yes it works!.... but actually...no.

Here's my problem: the NS3 doesn't only send program changes, it sends the keys I press as well! I only want the NS3 (for each individual program) to command program changes in the MODX, nothing more. In my set-up the only MIDI-connection I want is that the NS3 sends program changes to the MODX. No keys, no modulations, no effects, no changes in volume levels etc.

Does anyone have experience sending program changes using the EXTERN-function? What am I exactly missing here?

Cheers,

Niek (The Netherlands)

PS: In my MIDI-section menu I've turned everything to 'off'. I only use the Extern-function (since every program I use has to possibly direct different programs of the MODX).

Hi-

What version of software is running on your NS3? I do this all the time and it works fine. I send program changes, but nothing else. Once the Extern section is turned on, make sure none of the zone lights are activated and it will do exactly what you want. So Extern has to activated, but the zone lights have to be all off for this to work.

There was an earlier bug that sent program changes when the Extern section was not actually activated, so that may be what your are experiencing.

From the manual:

"NON-KEYBOARD EXTERN SETUP
In addition to the regular keyboard zones, there is an extra option - selected the same way as regular keyboard zones - that doesn’t assign the Extern section to the internal keyboard at all, signified by all KB ZONE LEDs being off for the Extern section. However, all other External features are still active, such as the Pitch Stick and the Parameter knob. this is useful when you want to control external equipment with no need for MIDI keyboard messages."

I understand you don't want things like pitch stick or sust pedal sent either, so just don't enable them.
