Piano Sustain Adjustment

Post by Proculgaz »

Hi Everyone
So, New to the Forum and to the Nord Keyboard, I have the Stage 2 EX 73, I have only had the keyboard a couple of weeks, so please excuse if this question has been asked before, I did try a search using the subject name, but couldn't find anything.

What I would like to know is, is it possible to adjust the length of Sustain of a piano, to a shorter length, Foe example, I have watched many video's, where the notes, Chords, of runs are Sustained, but not so much as to bleed into each other. I have the Triple pedal, and if the sustain pedal is held down the sustain is so long, after couple of chords it starts to sound like a complete mess, even when releasing the pedal to try to avoid the notes clashing, I can't seem to get the same effect and sound of some of videos I've watched.

Thx in advance.

:welcome: Hi,
Do you mean that when you release the sustain pedal, the sound keeps sustained?

Ar you sure there isn't something wrong with the pedal settings? If you release the pedal in between changing chords or 'related' notes, the unwanted 'bleeding' should not be there.
What happens if you don't press the pedal at all?

Hi
Thanks for replys, will try to answer in order.

1, The pedal works as it should, (down Sustained) (Up Dampened)
2, The Half pedalling is ok for just notes you want sustained, but it's not that effect I am after.
3, releasing the pedal during chord changes Does stop the bleeding, but is very noticeable, and abrupt.

I just really need to know if there is a setting / Adjustment that allows for the sustain length to be shortened.

Thanks again for the replys.

I do not think there is and adjustment like that.
Can you make a recording and post it here to understand exactly how the sustain works in your instrument and which videos you are talking about where the sustain works differently?

Hi
If there is no adjustment, then it is probably me, Having played an organ for the last 45 years or so, then switching to a single keyboard, and using more piano sounds, I probably need to work on the pedal technique, a good example is a guy on YouTube called Jackson Taylor, as he plays the same kind of music I like, However.......... If I attempt this, after the first few notes everything just becomes a jumbled mess, as the sustain seems so long.

Hi there Procul,

I'm having a similar question. I don't have an answer right now, I will post if I do figure out anything. I only have a single sustain pedal, so the functionality is less than what you have (triple).

I do notice that I need to work the sustain pedal quite a bit to help with the emotion / expression of what I'm playing, and also to help minimize the jumble you mention. Sometimes the 'jumble' may be desired, but it would be nice to be able to control the jumble a bit more. I don't know (yet) if the sustain settings are universal across all piano types. Possible that some piano patches have different sustain types / settings?

Cheers

Hi,

The only setting that is maybe relevant here is 'long release' which slightly smoothes the end of the un-sustained notes to make them less abrupt.

In the video you linked to the guy's using a decent whack of the reverb and also a quiet synth pad layered in, both of which maybe mask how frequently he's refreshing the peddle?

Cheers

Learn to use the pedal adequately... ;)

Or, as suggested above, try to layer an AP sound with a sample that holds the chords with adjustable release time for a special effect (without using the sustain pedal).
