Nsmp3 vs. Nsmp....Anything missing?

Postby iluvchiclets » 12 May 2019, 15:37

Hello everyone,

I am studying the Nord Stage 3 very carefully before buying, and one thing I noticed is that the version 3.0 samples have a sample not available in 2.0...It is called Orchestron.
I love this sample! It then occurred to me, has anyone confirmed if all the 2.0 samples have been converted to 3.0?

I would hate to give up my Electro 5, only to find one of my favorite synth samples is not available for me to use in the 3.0-only format on the Stage 3.

Has anyone else looked in to this? I'm curious if anyone can confirm...

I don't think there's ever been a .nsmp2 file format...
Versions 1 & 2 of the Sample Library both use .nsmp and version 3 uses .nsmp3.

I believe the Optigan & Orchestron samples were actually added (back in 2011) to the original (version 1) Sample Library.
I don't believe they were included in version 2 (or version 3) of the Sample Library though, of course, they can be read, as is, by any machine that can directly read .nsmp files (like your Electro 5).

Fortunately, the latest version of Sound Manager can convert .nsmp to .nsmp3, so you should still be able to use them with the NS3 though I haven't tried converting these particular samples.
However I have converted other samples from both v1 and v2 of the Sound Library for use with my NS3 without any problem

The original samples can be found at:
https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-lib ... orchestron
I've put the link here because I'm not sure it can actually be accessed from the Nord Sample Library Archive page any more...! :?

Thanks for the reply,

Sorry about the mix-up with "nsmp" terminology, I guess I was trying to differentiate between 2.0 and 3.0 samples.

And the "Orchestron" I mentioned in my original post is not the sample I was thinking of...my apologies again! I don't have a Stage 3 in front of me, but it's one of the 3.0 samples that has a whole bunch of instruments mapped across the Stage 3 board. It ends with a "gong" on the lower keys. Perhaps it's called "Orchestral Mellotron"?

At any rate, I like the .nsmp sounds so it's good to know they can be used on a Stage 3. Thanks for your answer! :)

By the way - that is an amazing link you gave me. I have never seen that before, and when you look at the "Nord Sample Library Archive" heading, you cannot see the category "Synthesizers"

How did you discover that?

There's some amazing stuff there! If you had not provided that link, I would not have known about all those wonderful Moog Samples! What's up with that, NORD? Hiding samples on your site?

Everyone should have a look at that page....

Yeah, back in the day when there was only the original Sample Library, I'm pretty sure that Synthesizers WAS in the header list...
I figured it probably had to be somewhere because over the years, ever since I got an Electro 3 (around 2012), I've downloaded everything that Nord offered so I've got all of the original Library (now called Archive), v2.0 & v3.0.
So I put 'Nord Orchestron' in Google and up it came at the top of the list :)
I've no idea why it's not available from a link on the Archive page...

When I've got the odd spare moment, I'm currently slogging thru sorting out what's in v3 that's not in v2 and vice versa. Then I'll probably do something similar using the Archive Library.
Once I've got an idea of what Archive & v2 stuff hasn't made it to v3, I'll probably post something up here.
I wouldn't hold your breath though; this will take some time and Nord'll probably have brought out v4 by the time I'm done!! :D

Finally, I also have (in .nsmp3 format, converted from .nsmp) 770MB of Oberheim samples (Matrix 6, Matrix 12, OB-X, Expander) and 105MB of other synth samples (Ambient Pads, D70, Jupiter 8, JX10, Synth Pads, Synthex) that are NOT on that Synthesizer page.
I'm pretty sure I originally got them from Nord's website but I've no idea how you'd find them now...!

Edit: some of the above extra samples in .nsmp format (along with others that I didn't have!) can be found here - http://www.sc-sounds.com/synths.php

Wow - fantastic stuff!

(Except my poor Electro 5 is completely full of samples I like with their paltry 256MB...argh!)

I appreciate you sharing these links - I guess l'll download and archive what I can, in the event I'm 90 years old one day and Nord graciously decides to let us have a whopping 1 GB for sample memory in their "Stage 7" or "8" ...sheesh... (Mind you, I probably won't be able to play by then!)

Thanks again for your great post!
