NS4 Extern Sustain

Post by thomaserdmann »

Hi there,

I have just upgraded my NS2EX to the NS4 and it has been great so far. I'm wondering if anybody found a way to get sustain to an external keyboard without the keyboard playing the actual notes. This was possible on the NS2EX by turning the KB zone off. I don't mind sacrificing one synth layer to extern but I don't (always) want to play my external synth with the Nord, just mirror the sustain pedal. My current workaround is the extern layer split point to the highest region of the Nord but this is not a very elegant solution.

This could very well be a bug too. If I turn off the layer after assigning it to extern, the modwheel still goes through but sustain does not. Even when I turn that layer back to synth, modwheel keeps working. Only when I layer init, it will stop sending the modwheel to the extern.

Hi - I had to resort to losing an extern to allow this. But it still only works with the layer active, so has to send notes. Annoyingly there appears to be a bug where aftertouch is transmitted on extern midi channel, even when layer is not active. Pity that sustain control messages don’t behave that way (and aftertouch not) I’d like to use a single sustain pedal to control both my keyboards like you describe on the NS2EX above. Might be good to have an option in the midi or pedal menus to always transmit to external channels.

In the External Menu you can choose if AT and MW are sent on the External channels (also Ctrl Ped and Swell). By default this setting is On but you can choose to set it to Off if you choose on a per program basis.

What I think is happening is that when an External Layer is not active it's in a state similar to 'No Zones' on previous Stage models but a bit more limited. You can send Midi data controlled in the External Menu (Prog Change, MW, AT, Ctrl Prd and Swell) or not as you choose, but you can't play external notes or send any midi cc data which is controlled in the Synth Section like Sustain Pedal. I don't really see this as a bug as it gives you a little bit of External control without sacrificing a synth and you can switch all parameters off if you wish.

It would be great Sustain Pedal was added to the list in the External menu and maybe Pitch Bend too.

That would do the trick yes! Hopefully a future update can bring this.
