But really, every instrument is just one particular set of decisions and prioritised compromises.
Knowing your instrument is also knowing what its peculiarities, limitations, and special features are that make it unique.
I happen to really like the set of features that the Clavia guys apparently thought important. The Stage 3 really is a great synth. And I’m looking at a Memorymoog, a JX-8P, SH-09, PolySix, and a Minimoog as I write this.

Except if there are 2 synth layers available (as is with a Stage 3).
Or if you get the initial pluck from the Mod Envelope.

Unnecessary complex IMO, also removing the 2nd synth slot. Having a proper ADSR per slot may enrich the sound design heavily (which is the minimum that you may expect in a flagship unit)
Current Keyboard Rig: Nord Stage 3 compact, Yamaha Montage 7wh, Yamaha YC61, Alesis Fusion 6HD. Yamaha babygrand Piano. Extra sounds Ipad with AUM and plenty of synth apps + onsong pro

Re: NS3 Synth questions
Point is, it can be done, and I hadn’t thought of that. The fact that the Stage 3 has two separate synth engines adds a *lot* of options.
Of course, you’re right that this eats the second slot, when adding a sustain stage to the envelope would suffice.
But again - the limits and features that require you to think „inside the box“, as it were, are part of the fun of a synth.

It's really only a matter of perspective and application as to whether you look at the 2 slots of synth functions as being 2 different parts of a single synth sound, or two different synth sounds. Both approaches are equally valid.
And while it may be a flagship, but there are still compromises, it doesn't quite have every synth function of the A1, every organ function of the C2D. And there's also the limitation of how many controls fit on the surface (unless you're willing to make the controls smaller, which is a different compromise).

Re: NS3 Synth questions
Good point @anotherscott. Nord Stage 3 is not a flagship synth, flagship piano, or flagship organ. It is a Frankenstein instrument, where portability, simplicity and playability are the top priorities. They all work together to make fun sounds accessible. Lead 4 and Wave 2 are flagship synthesizers. They both provide ADSR envelopes.
PS. But of course @neomad we can all have our own opinions. You just happen to disagree with a handful of swedish engineers...

Note that it’s quite likely that some of those Swedish engineers may disagree, too.
