NS3 Newbie: storing program with current synth settings

Postby nordphi » 07 Nov 2021, 05:48

hi everyone and sorry if I'm missing something obvious but I can't figure this out or if it is even possible.

the manual states:
When a Nord Stage 3 program is stored its Synth settings are stored
together with all other panel settings, but it is also possible to select and
store Synth sounds separately from programs

indeed factory programs seem to come with associated synth presets,
however when I attempt to store my program, it is saved without the current synth settings.
ofc I can store synth preset separately with the STORE SYNTH button, but it's unproductive in a live performance to have to select a program, and also a synth preset separately. I'm expecting that selecting my custom program would also load the synth preset settings* that was active at the time of saving the program. don't know if it makes sense. any help greatly appreciated :thanx:

Hi, a program always saves its current synth settings, Synth Presets that you create with the STORE SYNTH are just a library for storing synth patches for fast recall, but they are not stored as such in the Program (i.e. a program saves its own set of all synth section parameters which are not necessarily the copy of a synth preset, they are what they are when you save the program )

Welcome to the forum!

What maxpiano says lead me to the conclusion that synth presets are not made to be used within a performance, but only as a shortcut or base for building new sounds in a rehearsal with a preset that is often used. Your Stage has a lot of knobs and switches, but in the end, you'll use those for customising your sound on the fly. That's probably why a program stores the actual settings, not just a preset.

I’m confused: you write that when you save a program, it is stored “without the current synth settings”.

This should not ever be the case, at all. A program ALWAYS includes ALL current settings for all engines and effects on both panels.

Or are you saying that changes made to a loaded synth preset are saved as part of the program, but not saved back into the synth preset?

That is the only way it should be — a synth preset is one component that can be used across many programs. Changing this in one program could potentially affect dozens of others. If you want that to happen, you can explicitly save a synth preset.

That would be like putting a filter on a sample in one program and suddenly having that sample filtered in all other programs that use it. :shudders:

 thanx for the replies,
I indeed stated my issue accurately, so
maxpiano wrote:Hi, a program always saves its current synth settings

analogika wrote:This should not ever be the case

this is exactly why I made this post in the first place, it's not working as intended.
is it possible another thing activated on the keyboard would prevent the expected behavior?
or is there a manipulation to do when selecting my stored program that loads the associated synth (that I expected to be saved along my program)?
can't believe it would be a bug because this is such basic feature.

analogika wrote:but not saved back into the synth preset?

no I understand to save back into the synth preset itself you have to use STORE SYNTH, not STORE.

analogika wrote:Changing this in one program could potentially affect dozens of others

now i'm confused, you meant "Changing this in one 'synth preset'"?

I'll try to do a video to show that it's not working as intended if I don't find the obvious solution meanwhile.

FZiegler wrote:but in the end, you'll use those for customising your sound on the fly. That's probably why a program stores the actual settings, not just a preset.

but that's the thing, I don't have time to customise on the fly, I need to have my programs and their synth settings ready before the show, so that I can switch quickly & easily as we perform the tracks. I don't have time to turn those knobs, that's what we do during rehearsal looking for sounds. [edit: I see what you meant, it makes sense indeed, but "That's probably why a program stores the actual settings" is what's not working]

:thanks:

From NS3 manual:

SYNTH PRESETS
When a nord Stage 3 program is stored, its Synth settings are stored together with all other panel settings – but it is also possible to select and store Synth sounds separately from programs. this way a library of your favorite synth sounds can be built, easily accessible whenever needed. The nord Stage 3 also comes with a large selection of useful Synth Presets right from the start.

So I think you are still confusing the role of Synth Presets, rephrasing the manuale we can summarize as:

Program: stores everything expect Global settings, including the current parameters of the Synth section when you hit "Save/Save As" (Program), regardless they come from a Synth preset and/or manual cheanges.

Synth Preset: "Store Synth" stores only the Synth section parameters on a location of the internal Synth Presets library

When a Synth Preset is loaded/recalled its parameters are "copied" into the Program (the parameters, one by one, not a reference to the synth preset).

So if in a Program X you recall a Synth Preset Y and save the Program, then later you change and save a new version of that Synth Preset (call it Y'), Program X will keep the Y parameters, unless you recall Y' and resave that Program X.

Hope it is more clear now :-)

Hope it is more clear now
actually it is precisely what I expected the keyboard to do, like stated in the manual.
(and also why I was confused when analogika wrote "Changing this in one program could potentially affect dozens of others" because to my understanding, and like you are saying, the program should contain its own copy of its synth settings, independently of the other programs). I don't have the keyboard right now to do more testing, as I'm just the messenger of the issue, but I've witnessed it myself yesterday, and as a coder I fully understand what you mean by "reference" and copy of values, and was puzzled by the keyboard not doing what was stated in the manual as I was telling my friend that it should actually work, like you guys are telling me right now :P

I'll let you know next session.

Make sure the Memory protect is turned off, but guess they have discover that when trying to save any changes.

Apologies for the confusing wording:

I meant that it would be catastrophic if loading a synth preset and changing some parameters would save back into the synth preset when storing the program.

You did better at figuring out what the hell I was trying to say than I did at writing it!
