NS2 : Best organ swell pedal

Post by Ritchie333 »

Well, my old volume pedal has finally given up the ghost and I need a replacement for my Stage 2.

I'm a little surprised that while Nord does a good line in sustain pedals, and supports organ swell separately from a generic foot pedal, it doesn't say much in what's on offer. The manual gives a vague reference to the Yamaha FC-7 and the Roland EV-5, without going into much detail. Ideally I'd like something that is robust enough for regular stage use and will rest in whatever position you set it to (I'm thinking of the Dunlop Crybaby here), has a minimum number of cable connections, and ideally has a side switch that can plug into the rotor speed jack (like the Hammond EXP-100F). I'm not entirely convinced that exists?

Any other suggestions? I do a lot of organ in my band and couldn't live without a swell pedal, particularly if I'm doing piano with one hand and Hammond with the other.

I have purchased a couple of different pedals for this and finally ended up using the Moog EP-3 in one setup and the Korg XVP-20 in my othe rsetup. The Yamaha FC-7 is a very good one with a wide range, but for me it's too steep even though the position can be slightly changed. The Moog as well as the korg are very robust and rest in all positions firmly.

Edit: none of them has a switch for rotary control, and I don't know about any which has it and works with a Nord

In the past, I have considered the Ernie Ball 6168, which has a side switch. However, there are older threads on this forum that suggest avoiding Ernie Ball pedals as they have a completely different response curve and don't work well with Nords.

Boss FV-500H or Boss FV-500L(stereo lo-z) stay were they are placed and have a shallow enough travel to sit or stand for use.Sturdy, pedal will only budge when used,no surprises like plastic.
No trem switch on there, the Boss FS6 can be lined in/out from the FV type pedal.Only knock on those silent sturdy switches are the 9V batteries they gobble up.
Korg also makes a lower profile steel volume pedal, never tried one.Boss EV-30 dual controller pedal can'marry' two Nord manuals to a single 'swell'.Also steel, and small!
Yamaha FC7 has a steep travel, good pedal though, just not comfortable ergonomics like the Boss. The Yamaha FC7 has a 'molded end' light duty cable,Boss uses 'real' cables.

I've been using dual Yamaha FC-7 pedals for swell and control pedal since I first got my NS2 in 2011 and now they are used with my NS3. The same pedals all this time. It's bulletproof and feels great to me. I have a few extras at home and in the rehearsal space, then a dedicated set for my gig rig.
Nords: NE2, NS2 88, NS3 Compact x 2
Live rig: NS3, Vent, Radial KL-8, Shure PSM-900 IEM Rig, UE18 & UE7 IEMs.
Studio: Hammond A-101 & Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Yamaha S90, NS2, DSI Prophet-6, Vent II, Roland JX-8P.

Reading the comments on the said web page, I don't want to trade my halfmoon switch in for a pedal whose switches sometimes act and sometimes don't. But some seem to be happy with it.

The same pedal is available without switches too, just for info.
Crumar Accessories - Long throw expression pedal model EXP-10 (with metal base)

Another option is the Studiologic FP50 Organ Style Expression pedal. https://www.studiologic-music.com/products/fp-pedal/
