Nord Triple Pedal with NS3 Synth Section

Postby emili0 » 20 Sep 2021, 05:23

Hi all - have been considering grabbing an Nord Triple pedal (despite sticker shock) in order to have use of the Sostenuto pedal. Can anyone here who has it tell me if the Sostenuto pedal is effective on the Synth section -- or is it just for the Piano engine? Will make a big difference in my decision as i make heavy use of pads / poly patches that mix the two

Thanks in advance for your help! :keyboard2:

Its just for the Piano. What would you expect it to do in a synth?

Edit:My original answer was incorrect, the correct answer is yes, Sostenuto does work in the snyth section on the NS3.

Maybe the OP expects to do what was possible on the Nord Stage 2 i.e. use it as Latch for the synth section, but afair this feature has been removed from NS3 Synth, (together with the fellow KbGate option)

Hi,
If it's just about sustain, all sections have a SUSTPED option : SUSTPED (Shift + Octave Shift right/up button) activates any attached sustain pedal for the Synth section. Or did you mean something else?

Hi all - thank you so much for your responses. High level I was just wondering how - if at all - the sostenuto pedal interacts with the synth section. My hope was close to what Hlaalu wrote. I was curious if it would behave as it would on the piano section, i.e., allowing me to sustain a pad in my left hand while I shred a lead in the right.

Sounds like it's a "no". I'll make do with my sustain pedal for now. I can de-activate it on the B panel for leads. Thank you all for saving me 400 bucks!

I was completely ignorant about sostenuto, I thought it was a posh word for sustain, I don't know it from upright piano's I played, but it's only sustaining the notes that are played at the moment that the pedal is depressed..

Good! But ... can you also "exclude" it from affecting the Synth section?
I mean, I couldn't find any related setting in the NS3 manual (while on NS2 it was part of the section's pedal settings under its Octave buttons) so it may sound like it is always active :?:

OK, so the SustPed setting/led on NS3 actually includes both Damper and Sostenuto pedal, together so you cannot enable Sustain but not Sostenuto (or viceversa), got it.

@Hlaalu et. all

This is excellent news, thank you so much for checking. I am going to take the plunge.

This is particularly important to me as I make heavy use of thick pads / poly patches on the NS3 synth. What you are calling the "side effects" of the sustain pedal are particularly strong with patches like that. The mud builds quick. Looking forward to incorporating the sostenuto here.

@wartaler -- I also learned on uprights with a "practice" pedal instead of the sostenuto, and only recently learned how it works on grands. Fascinating that someone was able to engineer such a cool and nuanced effect so many many years ago.

Now I have got to check if the sostenuto works for organ too

And do let us know about this! :D

Really interesting that Clavia doesn't have this laid out on their webpage. Their marketing for the triple pedal actually seems to suggest it's exclusively for the piano engine.
