Thank you very much for your work and to share it with us!

I need still time in understanding all the midi functionnalities, and this tutorial'll help me a lot.

Thanks again!

F.

The document is really useful for midi out, thanks, but I couldn't find anything in the file for setting up the Nord as slave using a controller as master - is it in there and I just didn't see it?

I've got my Stage 2 connected to a Roland Ax-7 keytar which can run split or layer two voices/sounds but each sound needs to be coming in on a separate midi channel, so the global midi setup isn't working for me. I'm thinking to change and use slot midi control instead, but I need to be able to make program changes from the keytar to the stage - does anyone know if that is still possible using a slot midi control setup? Or have any advice as to how I could do a better set up? Thanks a lot in advance :)

I've never tested if the Nords react to a program change message that is sent to anything else than the global MIDI channel - I would assume not, but I don't know for sure since I didn't test it.

You're going to play the Nord using the keytar, right? Because you mention 'each sound needs to be coming in on a separate midi channel' - I assume you're referring to the Nord in this case?

I'm pretty sure the following diagram is in the document:

Image

Normally you'd be using the global MIDI channel (the arrows numbered with 1) when you've got your controller connected to the MIDI port. Of course, you could also give the slots of section their own individual MIDI channel and send directly to those (the arrows numbered with 4). If you send to the global channel, whether a slot is enabled and/or active determines which slots get MIDI from the global channel (the arrows numbered with 2). If MIDI is sent to a slot (either directly, or via the global channel), whether a section is enabled and the split set up (if any) determines which sections get the MIDI data (the arrows numbered with 3).

If you've got your Nord set up in such a way that the correct (= the ones you want) slots are active and that the correct sections are active and have the right splits set up, I think you wouldn't even need to set up a split on the controller, since sending via the global channel should take care of that. If you use the global channel, for the Nord it will look like you're playing on the keyboard of the Nord itself. Of course, by setting up a split on the controller and by using separate MIDI channels for both sides of the split you might get a more flexible setup.

Note that it is perfectly valid to have multiple sections and/or slots set to the same MIDI channel. For example, if you set both synth sections to the same channel, you'll always get a layered synth sound (maybe a detuned version in slot B?) regardless of which slot is active/enabled and whether a section is enabled or not. This also means you can't use a single synth section unless you change the MIDI channel of one of the two; loading a silent sound in one of the two might be a wacky work-around.

I like to think of this as 'routing' MIDI to the right destination, similar to the way you'd do it in a computer network. Alternatively, you could think of it as the program for a music festival. If you'd want to hear a particular band, you'd first check which areas there are (which slots are enabled/active), then you'd check which bands are playing (which sections are enabled) and then you'd check when they're playing (the split configured). Giving a section its own MIDI channel is like knowing you need to go to the west of the festival area (slot B), the small stage (piano section) where Richard Cheese will be playing from 16:00 to 17:30 (the split).

I hope my babbling actually makes things more clear

Ho ho ho! guess who's back in town? at least temporary! :)
1st of all, i am very glad you found this document helpful.
2nd is that Johannes now has taken over my document to make a "follow up" better suited for the NS2.
I also must say i'm sorry i haven't responded to all your PMs. i am very busy nowadays and there are simply not enough hours per day to respond to your Qs.

if you want to use the NS as a slave, you'll need to know which midi cc:s to send from your master. you need to check the midi controller list, within the NS manual (pg 58 in the NS2 manual). you'll also need to set the midi recieve channel (to match the transmitting channel on you master) and also enable midi recieving on the NS.

I wish you all good luck with your red beasts! :)
Best regards, Henrik

Dear all:

Finally I managed to update the great MIDI tutorial by Henrik, fix some small things, update it to the latest releases of the OS, add some more setups, and, most importantly, make it compatible with the Nord Stage 2 (indicated where differences are).
So it's a "Nord Stage 2 MIDI Tutorial" and at the same time "Nord Stage MIDI Tutorial v2" ;-)

While some minor changes and edits might occur, they will always be updated in the same file, which you can get here:

The Nord Stage MIDI Tutorial

Thanks before all to Henrik for the great job in writing the first and very extensive version, and lots of MIDI threads and in particular very detailed replies from mjbrands.

Feel free to comment or suggest if you spot some errors or have some ideas to improve it further.

Cheers!
Johannes

Ohh, shiny! Is it me, or does it look a lot better now, layout-wise?

I really liked the original layout, done by Henrik in Open Office, so basically kept it, just imported it into Word, and now I realize the import was not perfect, some fonts are out of proportion, will fix that. Probably you got distracted by the coloury NS2 buttons and Live Screenshots ;-)

Postby sppavanelli » 20 Aug 2013, 22:56

Hello! thanks for the post. It will be usefull.

I am testing some MIDI setups between my NS 2 and my KORG R3. I had some progress but I still don´t know how to change PROGRAMS in my NS2 with de R3.

I want do PLAY A PROGRAM at the NS2 and, AT THE SAME TIME, play ANOTHER program of NS2 using the KORG R3.

The basic IDI SETUP is:

MIDI OUT: KORG R3
MIDI IN: NS2

Can someone help me?
