Nord Stage 3 Rotary Painful sound

Postby RobbinBaauw » 10 Jul 2018, 21:46

Hi,

I just bought the Nord Stage 3 (OS v1.4), and have been playing around with all the sounds for a bit. The sounds are phenomenal, but....

one thing I keep struggling with is an organ with a rotary speaker. This sometimes gives a very loud sound, almost painful, mostly in the higher pitches (when playing at a semi high volume). A sound sample is attached here:

First the organ without a rotary, then with. Using headphones makes it very obvious. The following settings are used: Slow/Stop mode, Drive 1.5

I haven't been able to find any solution for this, is this by design or a bug? How would I be able to tune this?

Thanks in advance!

I can't hear any unexpected behaviour, except that it sounds like some reverb is added... (S2 EX rotary sounds dry... maybe S3 122 has some "natural body reverb" ? )

Are you using Stop OR slow mode?

The only thing that's a "loud sound" is the keyclick - and that's by design... If you're familiar with the sound and characteristics of a B3, please go into more detail ;)

Are you using the percussion ( also found in the Organ section) ? It sounds like that, but are easy to dial down to soft, or off.

Hi,

Thanks for your response!

I edited the fragment to only reflect the notes which to me sound very loud, the last 3 hits are 'normal' sounds:

When trying it on different amps I notice that it differs per amp, when but when playing at very loud volumes the 'problem' is noticeable. Though this could just be because of me playing it too loud for my headphones to sound properly.

I am sorry about the Slow/Stop setting, I wouldn't know, is seems that it is one setting but I am far from done learning all the features ;) Though this also occurs when using the 'fast' mode so I don't think it is related to those settings.

It is just that on some key taps (it seems random, not really related to velocity is seems like) there is a peak. Just a very loud sound. Perhaps it is just intended behaviour and on speakers it becomes less obvious

Tried it, and turning off the percussion doesn't do much in that respect, it seems to disappear only after turning off the rotary

Thanks again!

I've listened to both samples several times and hear nothing out of the ordinary. The organ sound through a rotary speaker set to slow/chorale will give the illusion of the sound moving around causing it to appear loud when the horns face the virtual mics and softer when the horns are away from the virtual mics as they rotate. Is that what you are hearing? If so, that's perfectly normal. And, velocity on a B3 makes no difference. B3 organs do not respond to velocity (and neither does the Nord B3 instrument).

Hope this helps.

Are you running it in mono? Sounds like it from the samples here. That’s a little weird.

I don't think it is, it seems to be a very specific frequency which perhaps is more amplified by my headphones or something else.

I am, through a sound interface, I could try stereo but I don't think that would fix it, I think it's just a volume thing.

Would there perhaps be a way to decrease the volume of the rotary (so that the rotary has less effect) though?

Again, thanks all!

There is going to be some variation in the sound level depending on the amount of percussion and the position of the horn towards or away from the (virtual) microphones, but I don't hear anything abnormal just listening quickly on the computer speakers here. There could also be some summing issue going mono; you could try to see what happens if you only take one of the outputs or if you press the mono button on the keyboard.

As for the character of the rotary, you can try to change to the 122 Close instead of the normal 122; it sounds a little different (I like it better).

But I would not rule out some resonance in your amplification system somehow...

Hm thanks, I'll try it when I get home later this day.

I noticed that it was a specific frequency which I could also tone down with the built in EQ if I wanted to.
