Nord Stage 3 HP76 Keyboard Noise is Terrible

Postby WannitBBBad » 16 Aug 2021, 16:52

While still under the warranty period, my Nord Stage 3 HP76 developed a clicking noise on just a few white keys and I got a warranty authorization for repair. Due to my work schedule and distance to send it off for repair, that never happened. Always playing it on stage or at home with headphones, I didn't notice how bad it was getting until my wife said something about how noisy it was. With the problem now across almost all of the white keys, the Stage 3 is somewhat unbearable to play at home without wearing headphones. Almost all black and white keys have that clunk sound after releasing that others have posted about as well. I've loved the size and weight of the 76-key model for playing out, but this is truly a fail on the keyboard side for such a great instrument otherwise.

I have the same problem on my Nord Electro 6 HP. 1 year old - two white keys make noise. There are now so many reports on failure on the HP keybed both here on the forum and on Nord Facebook groups that Nord should take this very seriously and consider the quality issues on the Fatar TP100 used on the HP keybeds.

That is pretty horrendous. I'd sell it and spring for a 88 key version if that meets your needs. The keys are great.

When I stop playing out I'll definitely be looking at the latest Nords at that time without this keybed. Until then, I might open this up and see what I can do.

I wonder how similar the TP100 is to the old TP10 - my Ensoniq TS-12 has a bunch of key clunk and it affects not only noise but also the feel.

This has been written about many times on this forum. I and others have posted several entries about my experiences with re-lubricating the action.

Yes the noise is bothersome, particularly when playing alone in a room with low amplification. It's annoying that the sound occurs at all, let alone on such an expensive instrument and sometimes after a short period of ownership.

Be aware, however, that there is absolutely nothing mechanically wrong with the instrument. It won't break and the action is not compromised. It's a lubrication issue and not a mechanical failure. The Nord TP100 mechanism is not the only product in the industry that suffers from mechanical noises, it just seems to be the most notorious. As far as I'm concerned, the advantages of the low weight and piano action far outweigh the sound.

If your instrument is under warranty, apply for a warranty repair, which is a keyboard replacement. There is no guarantee the replacement won't develop the same sound down the road.

If your instrument is out of warranty, you can chose to pay for a keyboard replacement or (like I did) take it upon yourself to do a thorough lubrication.

Other options:
- Sell your instrument and move on to something else
- turn up the volume or use headphones so you don't hear the sound (I know, snarky answer!)

In the video I'm simply tapping the top of the keys with no downward movement until the end. I'm not sure if lubrication can fix that but I'll look into it. Thanks.

I apologize for not watching the video earlier. I just gave it a look and that sound is indeed symptomatic of the lubrication issue. In both of my HP instruments, it sounded during the initial touch as well as during springbuck.

Wish I had a better explanation, but there is none. It's a noisy action and can be addressed. But it's not broken.
