Besides putting together your own arsenal of synth presets to start from, with work you'll be able to listen to a sound and know how you are going to approach programming it before even sitting down at your keyboard. To that end, you might spend a lot of time trying to get just the "right" sound for a song, perhaps more than you think it's worth, but know you're building a knowledge base that will make programming much easier as time goes on. Good luck to you!

This is exactly how it works-

thanks to all of you. I had the same feeling. You get a sample sound for example a flute and then you modify it to sound as ABBA´s GIMME GIMME GIMME ...... otherwise it takes more time to figure out how to reach to that sams sound used by Abba kb player in that recording. Im more into composing than playing covers.

yes, the easy way is that. Knowing e.g. that Van Halen used an oberheim synth for "jump", you can do the job using an oberheim sample or a custom one from this forum and tweaking it a bit. There is also the option to try and recreate the sound from scratch using only subtractive synthesis, this demands more knowledge about oscilator types, filters, envelopes etc in order to know how to proceed. You can aquire this knowledge by watching videos and tutorials online and also experimenting yourself. I prefer the second way, it trains your ears and makes you want to dive deeper into synthesis. Another good method is to download custom synth programs from this forum and use the program viewer software in order to see what the parametres of the sound are.

I think learning the basics of subtractive synthesis will allow you to create sounds more easily in the long run and give you knowledge you can use with nearly any synth keyboard-
