How to send Prog Change from Ableton to NS3?

Postby Schulti » 01 May 2020, 23:04

Hello :)
I wonder what i am doing wrong. I got a midi track in ableton. This track is sending midi over channel 2 (global channel on nord is 2).
I created a clip in the midi track and dialed in a bank, sub and prog number. I also inserted a note inside the clip.
Now, when i play the clip, the program on the nord changes, BUT not always...
It will only work once. When entering another program manually on the keyboard, there will be no effect when playing the programchange-clip again. BUT when i change something in the clip (bank, sub or prog) and then replay the clip, the program change is beeing sent... Thats strange!?
I hope someone can help me out. Thanks!

I had similar issues. I use Clyphx as a scripting tool to send pgm chg to hardware synths. The script runs at the clip level and has been reliable in live gig situations. I also had issues with being able to send midi pgm changes in ableton especially with multiple synths. This tools works well for me but you do have to learn the scripting language syntax. The guides are very helpful.

Hi,

you may want to check ALL midi-data transmitted with a program like the free Sekaiju: https://openmidiproject.osdn.jp/Sekaiju_en.html . Either store and load the track as a midi-file, or try to link your Ableton under Setup as a midi-device. As the results vary, as you wrote, you may want to investigate several trials for differences.

What you see in such a program may be puzzling at first, but ... you get used to it. Sekaiju lets you filter messages of any kind, so you can narrow down the problem step by step. It may be helpful to remember that MIDI is to music data what our alphabet is to language: the results depend on who is speaking, i.e. which characters are choosen in which order, if at all ; -)

Anyway what you should try to isolate is:
  • is the Ableton the cause?
  • is the NS3 the cause?
  • is it the interaction between both?

An indicator could be to change devices:
  • Ableton against sth else (e.g. Sekaiju as source)
  • NS3 against sth else (e.g.Sekaiju as receiver)
