Global Transpose alternative

Post by aputia »

Is there a method to maintain transpose settings from program to program without using global transpose?
E.g. I'm playing a program with a piano+pad and want to switch to another program with piano+strings. If I set a transpose value on the first program, I will loose this setting on the other program.
In live application I need to have a quick method, and not always I know beforehand the transpose value. But I need to set it on the fly when I play. And when I set it, I would like to maintain it even if I switch to other program.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to NUF.... maybe it would be better if you specify the model of Nord Stage you have, because settings can be different per model.

On NS3 besides Global Transpose there is also a per-Program Transpose setting (see NS3 manual, paragraph 6 "Program" section "transpose ON/Set"; manual also available in Italian from AlgamEko website)

One of the things that annoyed me on the NS3. At least it has global transpose accessible from the front panel.
All the "usual suspects" in the keyboardmarket do not have global transpose immediately accessible, you always have to press several buttons, maybe dial into a menue, or a combination. As far as I know the Nord and the Kurzweils are the only ones that have this for instant control, but the Kurz maintain it until you press both + and - same time, sets it back to zero.
Nord should have done that in a similar fashion. It always takes two hands to do that, where only one should be enough while playing live.

Well, maybe could be more accessible, but a "Global Transpose" is not an action that I would see being performed in a moment when you only have one hand free (but your mileage may vary)

I much prefer the way nord handles it because I don‘t have to remember to set it back to normal after we finished the „detuned“ song. One switch to another program - and all is done. With my korg I recently forgot it. Therefore I keep making individual programs at the korg for detuned songs to avoid this.

I can see this as a problem, though, when you're on a string patch for the verse, switch to horns for the chorus, and then back to the strings for the second verse…

Change and save on the fly (two taps on "Store") is the only way I can think of to work that scenario.

If you consider the way analogika proposes, you have two options: (1) take a copy before gigging and reset your programs afterwards or (2) have a full work-in-progress on your board. I'd go for version 1 as I'm not that organised to be sure to get every program matching before the next gig. Maybe, you remember some improvements-on-the-fly anyway.

I‘m happy to say that I don‘t have situations like this. I nearly never have to change a program at my nord during the run of a song, only exception may be that I start with piano and close it with organ. But I don‘t recall any one of the few transposed songs where this is the case.

Yesterday I made another strange experience: we recently lowered „Shup up and dance“ by a halftone. I made a program at my korg which enables me playing it in c sharp major as the original but didn‘t have enough time on stage to transpose the nord so I decided to play the pad parts life in c on it. Luckily no problem.
