External Midi Control and Amp Envelope Release Settings

Postby gboser » 16 Jul 2019, 23:47

I'm a couple of months in to owning an NS3 Compact, and have been having some randomly occurring issues with dropped notes when playing the NS3 with my SL88 Grand controller.

Today, while I was working on a simple patch for the Rush song subdivisions, I was able to get some specifics on what is going. The short version is that in some situations when both panels are active, the NS3 seems to choke on incoming midi which results in not all note on/off messages making it to both panels.

In the patch I was working on I had a Super Saw on panel A and a mixed choir (sample 205) on panel B with the choir morphed to the control pedal so it can be faded in and out.

If I play the patch from the Nord with both panels activated, it plays fine, but if I play it from the SL88 (or any other external midi controller) The Super Saw randomly drops out. This happens both when playing chords or legato runs at a decent speeds. And it also happens regardless of using 5 pin or USB.

Once I determined it wasn't an issue with the SL88, I dropped a hanon exercise into logic so I could play around with different velocity levels, quantization, etc. and what I ended up finding out is that whether or not the problem happens has to do with the release settings on the individual panels. With the particular patch I was working on, things went south if the Super Saw (panel A) exceeded 400ms. But there doesn't seem to be any hard threshold. When I started testing it with different sound source combinations it was really all over the map. Sometimes both panels with a high release point wasn't a problem, other times, it would be panel B that triggered it.

I have used my SL88 with several other keyboards (like a Kronos) with multi-layer capabilities and have never run into this type of an issue, which makes me think it is a bug. Is there something obvious I'm missing? There is a lot about this board I like, but I got it with the plan to have it work with the SL88, and I'm just not seeing that as working out if it has such a hard time with incoming midi.

What OS version are you using on the Nord? There has been some related bugs, I think, that are now fixed.

Obviously, it should work as well with incoming MIDI as it does with the internal keyboard, and if not I'm pretty confident it will be fixed.

Can you share the program and the MIDI file that makes this fail? I would like to reproduce it here, if possible.

My OS is current. (2.22)

I'm not with the board at the moment, but I will put together the patch and midi file and post it later today.

Ok, will try it here then when it's possible.

Sorry for the slow response on this. I got buried with work.

I have included the sound file for the sound I was using when I noticed this happening along with the midi file I used in logic to see if the problem was not isolated to the SL88. There are a couple of audio files as well (just in case you can't replicate the problem) that contain the output of the midi file with release turned up (causing the notes to drop) and release turned down where it plays as it should.

Ok, playing with this some more tonight, it appears that the problem only occurs win the Super Wave is loaded into panel A and the Sample is loaded in panel B. When I rebuilt the patch with them switched, the problem seems to go away.

Sorry for the delayed response here, @gboser, but I tried your midi file with the provided program on my NS3 HA88 model, using USB as the connection, on the latest firmware (2.22).

I am NOT able to reproduce the error, so there must be some differences between our setups. I was using the Global MIDI channel (otherwise you cannot play both synths, A and B, at the same time), on channel 1. I tried to run the Hanon exercices at 250 BPM (that was possibly where you set it?), on continous repeat, and I also played with having both panels audible and varying the decay time also to much longer than the 400 mS.

I'm not sure why this is the case. Do you have any other MIDI devices connected while testing this?

I am on firmware 2.22 and on Global midi channel 1. I have a 5 pin midi cable from the SL88 into the NS3 and also USB into my MBP. I have tried it from the SL88 with the USB disconnected and it still drops when playing both panels. Also, the just to be clear, it was release time, not decay that seemed to cause the problem.

Sorry, meant release time (although I tweaked both, just to test).
