Dual footswitch question

Post by Stokely »

Hello,

I'm looking to get a dual footswitch to do program changes/song mode changes.

I've seen a few demonstrations of the Boss fc-6 and Boss fc-7 so those appear to work out of the box as it were. I had my eye on some of the offerings by Saturnworks but I'm a bit confused by the options. The Nord specs I read said I need a momentary switch but it didn't specify "normally open" or "normally closed". Saturnworks offers both these options and in both cases they say the model is a replacement for the Boss rc models, so it's still unclear. There's also TS and TRS ends though I think I need TRS.

I'm not wed to Saturnworks by any means, I just heard good things about the build quality and they are very compact. This is the giant list of footswitch options:

NUX NMP-2 looks like a worthy competitor to the Boss pedals as well, at half the price.

I believe you can program the Nord so it will work with either an open or closed pedal.

For Saturnworks, definitely go for the TRS option and I'd go for Pro rather than Soft Touch as I find it useful to feel the click when you press a pedal.

The NUX pedal will cover all eventualities but I'd be worried about accidentally knocking the switch and putting it into the wrong open/closed/latch mode.

To confirm both those Boss pdeals work fine. I'm using the FS-6 which allows me to select latch which I use for the 'layer scene 2' function, otherwise momentary mode on the Boss is good for program up / down.

The FS-7 only lets you switch between momentary and latching for both pedals at the same time.

And for FS-7 and fS-6the pedal A and Pedal B labels are the wrong way round for the Nord. It annoyed me, so I opened up the pedal and swapped round circuitry (photo attached). The alternative was a modded jack to jack, which I decided might get mixed up with other leads.

Sorry I might have missed it... Boss fc-6 and Boss fc-7 are "normally open" or "closed"?

It looks like the fc-6 at least has a polarity switch. It's a bit confusing for me (not ever having worked with a switch like this) when you also get terms like momentary and latch thrown in :)

I checked the Ns3 manual--imagine doing that! :D -- and it says this about the program up/down connection:
1/4 inch connector for a two-button, momentary pedal, used for
switching programs up and down, or song parts when in Song Mode.
The polarity of the pedal can be set in the System menu.
So that matches what changearound posted.

I'm kind of leaning toward one of the Boss options, it'll probably outlive me and I know for sure that it works. I'll price out a Saturnworks option as well, might send them an email to get a bit more peace of mind on choosing the right option if I do decided to get one of their switches. It would be more costly to return it if I screwed up, you pay return shipping if you decide to send it back.

Hi Stokely,

Did you get sorted with change pedal, I've just bought Boss FS-7 and equally confused about cabling it up. Any suggestions/advice much appreciated

Looking at FS7, it is a dual footswitch where you can set the switches as FS5-U "Momentary" or FS5-L "Latch" (via the selector on its side), see https://www.boss.info/global/support/by ... s_manuals/

To use it as Program UP/DOWN for the Nord Stage 3/4 you need to set it as FS5-U "Momentary" then connect it using a Y cable, i.e. 2 mono jacks (A/B inputs of FS-7) into 1 stereo jack (NS Program up/down input).

Polarity is not relevant as it should be auto-detected by the Stage (if in doubt, leave it on I and check that on Stage the Type is "CLOSED")

PS: from the manual
Use without connecting an AC adaptor
You can use the FS-7 with momentary operation even if no AC adaptor is connected.
It will operate with the following settings regardless of how each switch is actually set.
[MODE] switch = FS-5U (MOMENTARY)
[POLARITY] switch = set to the “I” position

Thanks Max, works perfectly without power supply, much appreciated, however, I've noticed that if a programme using using panels A and B, it swaps them over
