Creating Loops and Recording Songs

Postby jjdnord » 02 Apr 2013, 16:26

Hi Everyone,

I'm sure there have been posts on this topic before.....I'm looking to do two things:

1. Create loops so that I can play along with bass and drums accompaniment.
2. Record what I've created.

I know there are a million different ways you can go about doing this, but is there a very simple, bare bones approach that doesn't involve intensive study? I have a Motif Rack that I can use to create the drum loops, and then I'd like to play over them with my Stage 2.

If anyone has any thoughts, or can point me to a good thread on this topic, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

I have my Nord Stage II connected to a Boss RC3 loopstation and this handles loops really well. It has a 3.5MM aux input which you could possibly use for the Motif Rack (sorry, I'm not familiar with that synth). It also has a few really basic drum rhythms built in which you might get away with in some situations, but it's by no means a drum machine, so bringing in your drums externally is a better idea if you can manage it.

It won't handle recording very well unless your recording is the length of the loop (which it probably won't be). However, it might be worth a look at the specs on the RC30, which can record two loops at once. If its loops can be of different lengths, you might be able to loop on loop 1 and record on loop 2.

the RC3 isn't much wider than a sustain pedal, possibly shorter from front to back, so I can't imagine the RC30 being too cumbersome. I bought mine off eBay almost new for around £130 (RRP is £180).

I use a line 6 DL4 looping pedal, very easy to use. I put some drum sounds on my nord stage2 and then loop them and improvise over them. good fun.

I use mixcraft and an alesis 4 channel mixer. It works great and sounds epic. There are some inbuilt drum loops and I run an electric bass in as well.

Well worth a look.

Hey beeboss,
Nice video.

I think that if you have the space, a Korg Kaossilator Pro+ is great. I have the original one and the Kaossilator 2, and they are quite easy and fun to use. But I'd go for the Kaossilator Pro Plus, since to record with the Kaossilator 2 you have to press and hold the record button. With the Kaossilator Pro, you just press a bank and endlessly loop it.

A big benefit of the Pro is that you have 4 banks and that you can record to SD Card your performance in realtime.

Here is a demo/live recording of my playing with a KO2 and my NS2. My playing may not be as good as DAvid Beebee's but you get the idea, before recording I actually already had some loops already made.

I just got a pile of audio drum hits and mapped them across the board in the sample editor. Took about 10 minutes
