Boss FV500-L as volume pedal

Post by druidstone »

Just wanted to post my results, after searching for how to use the Boss FV500-L pedal as a volume pedal I could find nothing on this forum!
The FV500-L is a stereo pedal so you will need a stereo lead.

System menu: Pedal type=EV-5 or EV-7 it didnt seem to make any difference which one.
Pedal volume on side of pedal set to min. zero.
Depress pedal fully - this will be maximum volume
Turn the volume control on the keyboard to the lowest. This is your starting point to define the volume range controlled by the pedal.

Now set the morph by holding down the Ctrlped button at the same time while you turn the volume dial to the maximum volume you want to assign to the pedal the let go of the Ctrlped button when you are done.
You should now have your volume pedal controlling the sound.
When you depress your heel on the volume pedal the leds on the volume dial will move in relation to the volume set.

*I think* (not sure) there are 2 different ways to use the FV pedals. One as a volume pedal (as a guitar volume, just dim the audio by connecting the audio output to the pedal and from the pedal to the amp), the other is via a "control pedal" mode, so you connect the pedal to the CTRL pedal input and control the volume from there and connect the audio outputs from the kbd to the amp directly . I think that the settings in the panel are the for CTRL pedal type of setup.

I have used the Boss f -500lL as an inline pedal using TS cables.
I prefer to use it as a controller pedal using a single TRS cable.
Also, you can use a stereo splitter cable with the TRS end in the
Nord and the 2 TS Ends in the foot pedal using the in & out of
the same number channel(1) of the pedal.

The advantage of using it the way Druidstone suggests (using it as a control pedal) is that it can morph any volume or combination of volumes at once per Program - and of course anything else that's morphable - rather than just using it as an overall analog volume pedal.

I use one (sometimes 2, CTRL and SWELL) FV500L pedal on my NS2, using the EXP socket and a stereo cable, which is the way the pedals is designed to work as a Roland Ev5 (?) compatbile Expression pedal.

Of course you may also use one pair of Input/output sockets and a Y (stereo to 2x mono) cable, but...why bother when you have the EXP? :?:
