Hi all,
Very quick question - is the Amber upright a Steinway?
Cheers Pete :)

The name of the files contains "GrSt" which to me sounds more likely to be coming from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grotrian-Steinweg

Thanks Max - that sounds very plausible.

+1

It’s my go-to piano. Fits perfectly with nearly everything I play.

I really like it too, but sometimes it seems muddy / bassy. What eq / other settings do you use with it, please?

I am constantly tinkering with the EQ, regardless of the piano sample. I find that each environment is different, so I'm not locked into a specific EQ setting.

In general, I tend to start with the following:
  1. Roll off the treble a tad to get rid of some of that tinkly stuff going on up top
  2. For the midrange, start with a frequency around 250-350Hz or so. Turn the gain down a lot, then sweep the frequency to isolate the offending mud. Turn the gain back up until you have enough body in the sound
  3. Adjust the bass to taste
An alternate approach is to enhance the mids somewhere in the 1-1.5kHz range. It will have a very similar effect.

One of the things I've discovered about the EQ that Nord implements is that the settings are rather interactive. There is some kind of correlation between the bass and midrange settings; they seem to affect one another. Because of this, experimentation is strongly encouraged. And, having a "set it and forget it" approach is probably not getting the most out of the instrument.
