A Question of Memory

Post by kbmatson »

Brand new Stage 3 owner here and love it! I have , however, been baffled by the how Nord (and perhaps the others?) deal with memory. What I mean is this.

Nord has the Sound Manager software, a big part of which is advertised as being able to shuffle in/out samples to get exactly what you want in the LIMITED memory space. They also talk about having gone from 1-2 Gig on the piano memory, as if that's some huge thing?

Maybe I'm missing something, but last I checked - flash memory is cheap ... like REALLY cheap .... like 5 pack of 16G SDHC for $30 cheap. SO - it begs the question - why not just spend $6 and put 16G (or a little more and put in 32G or 64G) in the thing and never have to worry about memory or shuffling stuff around? Riddle me that Batman?

I believe this is one of the most commonly asked/discussed topics.
Here is the thread i started on the topic, which supplies some answers: general-nord-forum-f29/why-the-memory-l ... 14689.html

The memory used in most Keyboards like the Nords, Montage, etc is expensive. REALLY expensive.

Like, a couple of hundred per gigabyte expensive.

It is completely different from normal SSDs, and you really, really don’t want to ever run samples directly from an SDHC card.
