Piano with good sustain
Hey
Im a bit of a Nord novice, I have a NS3 and tend to use only a fraction of its capabilities as Im a solo singer who tends to use just piano voices. Im looking for a good long sustain on the piano, any advice on how to get this? I would love to hear from anyone who is techie enough to have set up a really layered piano which could be my go to sound for solo piano and singing.

My "go to" pianos are typically the White Grand and Amber Upright. Using compression (far right on the Nord) can help notes retain a higher output level (but losing some initial dynamics if up too much) giving the impression of a longer sustain, however other options include adding a longer-sustaining piano sample to the synth section and having it fade in behind your primary piano, or incorporating a light "pad" behind the piano in the mix that can hold for a longer duration without standing out. Here are a couple examples with the pads further out in the mix but easy to move back using the Control Pedal. Follow the links to get to the programs that you can load into your Stage 3 using the Nord Sound Manager. I hope this helps, good luck!

Re: Piano with good sustain
Another quick question. Can I take these mp3 examples and load them in to my nord as samples?

Not directly, but you can convert them in .wav format and load them in the Nord Sample Editor, which will convert them in Nord's proprietary .nsmp files.

Re: Piano with good sustain
What Spider suggest to sample, is true for isolated (one note at a time) audio files, but not for recordings of a performance.
Before getting into sampling, it might be a good idea to try the many pianos in Nord Piano Library and learn how to layer some strings sounds.
You definitely want to try the ns3f files (links) that WannitBBBad has posted above which you can load into your instrument and reproduce the sounds he recorded in the MP3s. If you get stuck with the procedure, ask and people here will help.
Also maybe you can try using reverb to give some more spatial sustain to the sound.

Re: Piano with good sustain
Instead of a synth pad, you can consider layering a Rhodes EP under the acoustic piano. It will have the same polyphony and overall behavior of the piano, but will give you a warm sustaining sound similar to a synth pad. Keep it lower in volume than the acoustic sound, and it might yield the effect you’re looking for.

Re: Piano with good sustain
@stuartmclean, you have a wonderful instrument for what you want to do -- backing your vocals -- you just need to crack open the well-written manual and go through the examples. Follow that with a few youtube videos for reinforcement and more examples. Then, sit down at your instrument, put on some headphones, and spend some serious time. It will be worth it.
The variety and appeal of the sounds you can get out of a NS3 without much work at all is amazing. And you might enjoy the process.

I think I have gear issues ....

As noted by Mr_-G-, you can follow the links to get to the Stage 3 programs I used to make the mp3 examples (I modified my first response to add that point). Using the Nord Sound Manager available on the Nord site at https://www.nordkeyboards.com/software- ... nd-manager you can load the programs into your Stage 3. I use a control pedal for most of my programs, so you would need to get one to take full advantage of my programs and the morphing feature in general. I use a Yamaha FC-7 for my control pedal, but a search for "control pedal" in this Forum will yield other suggestions as well. Adding an EP in the other panel as suggested by Rusty Mike or simply adding a nice long reverb effect can add character to the piano without overshadowing it. Most importantly, reading through the manual provided for each Nord App as suggested by cphollis will help quite a bit. Good luck to you!

Re: Piano with good sustain
Thank you all so much for the help and comments on this. I think I do need to spend time getting into the manual but some of these suggestions have given me something to get stuck into. I know what will happen, as soon as I find the sound that suits me I will probably use that for most of my songs as Im very much all about stripped back playing to accompany my vocals.
