Expressive Synth - Love Thing (Joe Satriani)

Postby bluetrain » 18 Jan 2022, 02:56

Here is a program I use for Joe Satriani's "Love Thing".
(ExpressiveSynth.ns3f)

You can watch my YouTube video of it here:
Watch on youtube.com

It morphs A TOUCH and CTRLPED to wah effects (using OSC CTRL) on the Screamy Lead and works fairly well as an alternative for "lead guitar."

I would much rather have used WannitBBBad's DistortedGuitr2W program from here:
https://www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage-3-programs-ns3p-ns3pb-files-f32/rock-guitar-a-couple-programs-t17012.html

but the upper end on the distored lead guitar seems to "give out" and I also couldn't figure out how to combine 3 synth sounds (without dubbing...and I want to play it in realtime). I would need 3 synth engines for adding a bass to the 2 "Les Paul Neck-mic" sounds already being used in Panel A and B. Anyone know how?

Anyway, maybe someone else can find use for this program, too. Enjoy!

I forgot to mention, this is my first post. Hello, everyone!
I recently joined the community because I saw that good advice and real, usable programs were available here.
I have had the NS3 for about 2.5 years and love it. I play solo as a hobby, no bands.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum! Very nice video and program, I like the morphing you did on OSC2 for the effect as well. My program used 2 guitars but for different parts, so the panel set aside for the left split could be assigned to the bass. In case you want to try it, here's your program with the right distorted guitar added. I brightened it up a little with Freq and EQ, added the Wah effect on the control pedal, set AfterTouch for the high harmonic, and then put in the settings you wanted of having it in Mono with AMP Release set to 588ms. The Mod Wheel will add vibrato - another option would be to swap the high harmonic to be on the MW and Vibrato on AfterTouch (just my preference not to put them together on one control). After loading you'll need to reassign your piano to the program as I didn't have the same one loaded in my Stage 3. Good luck to you!

Thank you! Your latest version is very nice and will likely spawn a new YouTube video (of this song) from me soon (with appropriate credits to you, of course). Very exciting! Yes, the guitar is cleaner and more responsive with your latest changes. Now I have to relearn the expression pedal movements a bit because this allows me to more closely approach Joe's natural-sounding wah. I just had to tweak the Program III (what I use for the bridge) to cut down the AMP ENV Release a bit.

To answer another question: I was actually looking to combine the undistorted LesPaul with the distorted one, plus use the bass, which I assume would mean needing 3 banks (or perhaps some dubious resampling of the bass plus LesPaul undistorted?) IOW, I wanted to try not using piano as rhythm guitar. Anyway, doesn't matter, sounds great WITH piano.

Possible bug in Nord...or?
I wanted ask the group because I have experienced it now with both of your DistortedGuitr2W and ExpressiveSynth2 programs. The distortion effect works MOST of the time, but on rare occasions (perhaps <=5% of the time) it spontaneously drops the distortion effect(s) entirely, without me touching any knobs or buttons, leaving just the plain LesPaul sound. On these occasions, I have to switch program to something else, then back to get it to work properly. Any ideas?

Cheers!

You're welcome! It would be great to hear you cover the JS song with the new program whenever you have the time.

For your bass and guitar sample, making your own with the Nord Sample Editor 4 might be your best bet for having the notes you want where you want them. Based on the modified Les Paul sound, I posted a new program with a clean Strat with chorus on the left and a Clavinet added just for a little low end in the first octave like your program if you want to try it out as-is or using the clean Les Paul sample. I wish Nord made a simple bass sample for the Piano section, but using the Clavinet works OK layering it over the Stratocaster.

Regarding the bug you noted, I don't use distortion a lot but haven't ever had a problem with it cutting out. It's possible that the circuit board connection or pot might be the problem (do the EQ settings drop too?). If it happens again, check to see if the "E" (edit) shows up on the program display (assuming you haven't already changed a parameter); if so, the setting could be erroneously changing due to the problem I noted and toggling between programs loads the default settings again. Take care.

The symptoms that occur with the bug are that it <<sounds like>> it drops the Twin AMP SIM/EQ with Drive=10, the LP-M Filter with Drive, the Mono and probably a few other things, though none of the lights change on the console. And merely toggling these settings (without switching to another program and back) does not correct the problem. Also after it has occurred (and before I correct it by switching programs), I try switching the Oscillators between SAMP, CLASSIC, WAVE, FORMANT, and SUPER. There is NO SOUND on 2 or 3 of those, including WAVE and FORMANT. Toggling back to the default SAMP setting does not restore the distortion. It's just plain LesPaulneckmic.

When i load the program with its default settings (with distortion), I can very closely simulate this bug by manually turning off the aforementioned settings. Though, in contrast, I can switch between Oscillators and all CLASSIC, WAVE, FORMANT, SUPER and SAMP sound full-bodied, with distorted effects, etc. like they should.

I suspect it is because I don't have the LesPaulHarmonicW in my library? Is it somehow encapsulated in your ExpressiveSynth2 program, but is not "natively" on my Nord? Just a guess. What I was thinking is if I could just build the sound again from scratch on my Nord I could probably fix this.

Thx.

A few things to try: a) check the OS to make sure you have the latest version; b) delete the program, download the program again and save it to your Stage 3; c) right after pulling up the Stage 3 program, save the Les Paul synth preset to your synth bank as "LesPaulHarmonicW", turn your synth preset dial to where you saved "LesPaulHarmonicW", and then save your Stage 3 program again. The problem you're having sounds very odd. The effects and EQ settings are saved with the Stage 3 program, so stepping through the synth presets or simply the OSC types won't bring the EQ/distortion back. With LesPaulHarmonicW pulled up on the synth, I got sounds stepping through all OSC types. If you want to build the program from scratch, Forum member Florence has a Stage 2 and 3 program viewer at nord-stage-forum-f3/ns3-program-viewer-t19939.html Using either the online or offline version of the viewer, you can print out all of the settings used and recreate them on your Stage 3. Good luck to you!

Thanks again! Yes, renaming the Synth Preset sounds like something that SHOULD work to defeat this problem. It definitely makes it so I can scroll away from 8:29 LesPaulHarmonicW and back to it, which is a bonus. That app is just what I needed to reverse-engineer sounds. BTW, I am also a software developer (23 years) so I'll be interested in checking out the source code for that app on Github. This is so much cooler than my old D-50!

P.S. Yes on latest OS and Sound Manager versions.

I should have hit D#5 around time index 2:44 in the fast descending passage. I hit a C#5 instead (among other missed notes). Next time, gadget....
