Re: Using Nord Piano as MIDI with Logic Pro

If OSX already recognizes the Nord piano, the most probable problem might be that Nord piano is currently configured so that it doesn't send any midi commands out. (I'm not familiar with the Nord piano settings but I guess it can put midi messages on and off.)

The Nord piano user manual seems to say that by default Nord piano sends midi commands to the midi cable, not to the USB cable. Maybe changing the Midi Menu / Midi Channel setting from "1" to "USB1" would help. (just a guess)

As you can gather I'm new to setting up MIDI, as the Korg has just always been plug and play. I don't really understand all the MIDI settings on the Nord, but have tried changing both MIDI control change, and MIDI program change (whatever these are) to send/receive and also tried send. I've also tried changing the MIDI channel. I've no idea what MIDI send Ctrl, MIDI dump one, MIDI dump all are. I've downloaded the tutorial from here to bring me up to speed.

Whenever I connect the Nord Logic pops up with this

I've also noticed that although I though OS X recognised the Nord I'm now not sure it does. Here's a screen shot from the audio/MIDI program in OS X

If I connect the korg and click test setup, whenever I press a key on the korg keyboard a tone is heard. If i do the same with the Nord I hear nothing. You may notice that the korg icon has the numbers 1,2 & 3 'assigned' to it, but the Nord has none, could this be anything to do with it?

It's really frustrating. With the Korg I simply connected it and it worked. In logic I can click any of the 'instruments' in the global tracks list in the arrange window and it will 'play' whichever 'instrument' I have highlighted. I would like to be able to use the Nord to do this as well, so that I have the full 88 keys, as well as being able to send MIDI out to the Nord as previously discussed. I really am lost with this.

Well I never, I didn't even realise that it had USB 1 etc :thanx: This has done the trick. I scrolled through channels 1-12 and gave up at 12. Such an amateur mistake. Ignore my last post then as this now works, thanks so much. I can feel my blood pressure lowering as I type.

I think I'll leave exporting the MIDI track to control the Nord to another day. I'm sure I'll be back when I'm stuck with this

Hi Guys. Thanks for all the responses. I too have a Nord Electro 6 (HP) and am curious how to cue the sounds/patches in the Nord Via MIDI from my DAW.

The term is MIDI "Events."
Logic/DAW is basically recording the occurrence of your fingers pushing keys/pads/buttons/knobs/moving faders etc. and that happening is designated on your screen as a colored rectangle.... is called a MIDI 'Event'.

It is the time/place/length/velocity/modulation etc. and any other preferences you'd like to have set your way, att captured neatly on a multi-layered track. Most people probably underestimate the number of commands, and amount of information actually being captured...when they hit record on a midi track...buts that info belongs on another thread.

I would like to know how to have a MIDI event cue the sounds on my Nord. To be able to manipulate the analog settings (FX/Change Sounds), in real-time, while my DAW handles the "playing of the notes" would be pretty helpful. I am not a great piano player, so my focus goes on the keys while I am playing...but to have my DAW cue the MIDI events, and have the Nord play them back with its own internal sounds would be awesome.

Ok. Its not often you get to answer your own questions but for anyone looking for a quick explanation....

Load up External Midi Track in Logic X or Equiv. DAW.

Open "inspector" in Logic Arrange Window, (or access the MIDI Channel options for your external MIDI track) then select whichever MIDI channel you want to use. In my scenario, I chose track 2. So DAW set to MIDI Track 2....the Nord Settings...Global MIDI Channel 2...Local Control OFF on Nord and you should have the MIDI events coming back through the Nord, and whichever patches you load up on the Nord should engage. If you have stored settings, it is possible your MIDI channels may be different...

They say there is no I in Team. in this case I joined a forum, to answer my own question and post it. Hope someone else finds this info useful!
