USB MIDI In and out

Postby Augustaprime » 06 Aug 2019, 02:30

Hi all, proud new owner of the NP4. I'm trying to connect it to Garage band on my macbook so I get other sounds not built into the keyboard and play it back through the keyboard connected speakers. I have it connected by USB. My issue is... Garageband recognizes the keyboard as a MIDI in, I can play the keyboard and I hear the sound patch play through my macbook.. HOWEVER I want to send that signal back to the nord piano 4 to play through the speakers I have connected to it. Is it possible to send a midi signal to Garageband, have garageband determine the sound, say an organ, and then send it back to the keyboard to play that instrument through the speakers?

I've looked through the forum and am unable to find an answer so I feel like this is a dumb question. Thanks for your help

Nevermind I realize now that this won't work. The macbook would only send back a midi signal back, not an audio signal, so the keyboard would have no way of playing the garageband tones. Answered my own question!

Correct. You can then use a stereo minijack cable to connect your Mac audio out to the minijack input on the Nord, and thus way have the sound reach your speakers.

Is that minijack input only played over the headphones output?

Depends on the Nord model and generation, as far as I recall.

You can always use the headphone out to the mixer, if you need to, without any detrimental effects on most cases :-)

Was just a tip in case the OP wasn't aware. I often do this at home.

Edit: Just double checked for you, and on the NP4 the monitor in indeed is routed to both headphones and left/right out.

Re: USB MIDI In and out, accessing the midi menu

Postby alfie16 » 20 Oct 2019, 12:34

Hey, I've got a Nord Piano 2 and I've gone onto the menus section but when scrolling through the options there is only memory protect, fine tune and global transpose. I was wondering how I can access the midi menu as I am quite stuck. Thanks

That's the System menu, you need to enter MIDI menu. As explained in NP2 manual...

Enter the menus by pressing and holding Shift and the System, MIDI, Sound or Pedal button (program buttons 1 to 4).
