I don't disagree that an informed subjective viewpoint can be useful, as long as it stays squarely in the realm of "subjective viewpoint". Value itself is unique to the individual and the individuals' purpose. That's why I'm wary of "I know it when I see it." That's dangerously close to confusing opinions with facts. :) It's the difference between "obscene to me" and "obscene".

I think that we are not really that far apart on this. Clearly there is no objective yardstick for "goodness." That is the stuff of philosophy, not measurement, and is inevitably a matter of subjective judgment. No one is saying otherwise. In fact, in the article I linked, Chuck expressly said that his opinion was subjective, and we should just leave it at that. I'm sorry that my comment threw this thread off track and, moreover, I apologize to Mr. Hollis for hijacking his insightful observation and extrapolating it to a subject he did not address. The crux of the matter is that lutz1976 simply does not think that the NG is worth the candle. We are all entitled to our opinions. Actually, I would venture to say that most of the statements found on this Forum, and not just on this thread, are matters of opinion anyway, not of some objective "truth."

Hello all. These are my thoughts on the matter:
For me it is simple: I've tried almost everything on offer out there and keep returning to the Nord Grand as the yardstick by which all other boards' sounds measure to. The sound is most important to me, followed by action. And in this regard I am very pleased with the Nord. I also happen to love the look, layout, shallow menu, and lastly, the red is a nice change from the generic black these days.
The other huge selling point to me is the sound interchangeability. I'm surprised most of others haven't gone totally mainstream with this feature yet. Some also have sound cards, but you have to pay for these, which is another cost. And I consider its' asking price over 10 + years to be not that bad, particularly with the amount of use it will be getting.
Granted, there are tons of great machines I could buy if I wanted 1000 bells and whistles, but I only need decent AP's and EP's. I have other gear to tackle those jobs just fine.
Yes, it's expensive, but so is a good grand piano, which needs tuning and and micing up, if you are going to record. And then it only offers one sound, albeit a fantastic one. And preferably a good room to capture its essence the best. And it is not portable, doesn't have midi etc etc.
The only board that has a better action would be the MP11SE, but that is the only thing better to me. I typically have a piano 10 -15 years before trading to the next thing, and my next one will definitely be the Nord, soon.

Have to agree with you .
I'm not happy with the split keyboard function
It's limited
You can't use the piano sound across the whole key bed and layer another sound on the top half with the piano included.
Does anyone agree that there is a section in the upper octave that sounds very thin and tinny ( 4th octave c to f# )
Those notes sound harsh
There is no tone adjustment that will address this problem.
I noticed the same problem on the new Yamaha CP88 which I bought and returned
Very tempted to go back to my CP300
Still my favorite
I use the Electro 5 for my organ sounds

If you had an issue with upper notes on two different brands of keyboards using two different samples, I doubt is the instrument causing the problem. What are you using for amplification?

I use the Yamaha Stage Pass 500 for my monitors on stage, but practice using my AKG K260 headphones.
The sound problem is more noticeable with the headphones because there's no outside noise
To be clear, the tone problem is only on the grand piano samples.
My CP300 sounds so much better in the octave range in question

I've had a Yamaha CP300 for over 12 years. Along the way I've had the Nord 3, 4, and now the Grand. I don't have anything specifically negative to say about the Grand but like Keyz6263, I've found I'm gradually coming back to the Yamaha CP300. Unusually great amplification from the onboard speakers and the closet touch and sound to my acoustic that I've experienced.
